A syndicate tried to buy all possible combinations, but despite the National Lottery's efforts to prevent it, the syndicate only managed to claim a portion of the jackpot. To prevent such attempts in the future, the National Lottery made changes in 1992, transforming the Irish Lotto into a 6/39 game. This increased the odds of winning the jackpot, making it harder for brute force attacks.
The changes included doubling the starting jackpot, adding a bonus number to the drawings, and introducing new prizes for specific matches.
