Disney's ABCD 2, also known as Any Body Can Dance 2, is a 2015 Indian Hindi-language dance film that took the Indian film industry by storm. The movie was directed and choreographed by Remo D'Souza and produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur under Walt Disney Pictures. A stand-alone sequel to the 2013 film ABCD: Any Body Can Dance, ABCD 2 features an all-star cast including Prabhu Deva, Varun Dhawan, and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles, alongside Sushant Pujari.
The movie is partially inspired by the real-life story of Suresh Mukund and Vernon Monteiro, founders of the "fictitious dance crew" The Kings, who went on to win the World Hip Hop Dance Championship in San Diego. Dhawan and Pujari portray their characters in the film.
ABCD 2 was released by UTV Motion Pictures on 19 June 2015 in 3D, and it quickly became one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of that year. The founders of the group, Suresh Mukund and Vernon Monteiro, hail from Vasai and Nalasopara, respectively. While the movie takes a few creative liberties with the group's story, it still manages to be an inspiring tale that resonates with viewers.
One of the changes made in the movie is the omission of the Vasai bit. Instead, the story starts off with Suresh, Vernon, Vinnie, Raghu, and the other members of the Mumbai Stunners being labeled as "cheaters" and "copycats" after the judges find out that their routine is lifted from their idols, the Philippine All-Stars. The female judge even goes as far as to tell Suresh that his mother, a kathak dancer who died with ghungroos on her feet, would be bitterly disappointed.
The story then follows the group as they attempt to redeem themselves and prove their worth. Their journey takes them from Nalasopara to Las Vegas, where they become the first Indian dance team to participate in the World Hip Hop Championships. Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, the group manages to make it all the way to the finals.
Along the way, the movie explores various themes, including friendship, perseverance, and the importance of staying true to oneself. The characters are well-developed, and the performances by the actors, including Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, and Raghav Juyal, are top-notch. ABCD 2 Ending Explained
The film follows the journey of the Indian Stunners, a dance group led by Suru (Varun Dhawan), as they face numerous challenges and obstacles on their way to the top.As the group prepares for the competition, they are faced with internal conflicts that threaten to tear them apart. Olive (Lauren Gottlieb) develops feelings for Suru, which creates tension between her and Vinnie (Shraddha Kapoor), Suru's childhood friend.
Vinnie becomes jealous of Olive and confronts Suru, forcing him to confront his own feelings for her. Despite their initial hesitation, Suru and Vinnie eventually get together, and Olive agrees to continue dancing with the Indian Stunners after Vinnie recovers from her injuries. The team enters the final competition, where they are expected to perform a complex and challenging routine known as an "assemblage."
However, their hopes are dashed when Vinod (Punit Pathak), one of their key dancers, falls ill during the performance. Despite his friends' attempts to support him, the formation breaks down, and it seems like all hope is lost.
Suru refuses to give up and tries to motivate his team to keep going. Vinod, who suffers from tuberculosis, tries to encourage Suru and the others, and they eventually manage to successfully complete the formation with Vinod at the bottom. Although they don't win the competition, they win the hearts of millions with their incredible performance and determination.
Suru reflects on his mother's lessons on dance and the importance of never giving up. In a voiceover narrative, he shares how his mother's encouragement and support helped him pursue his passion for dance, and how he hopes to inspire others to follow their dreams.
ABCD 2 Plot
Suresh 'Suru' Mukund had a dream of becoming a big dancer, which he wanted to fulfill to honor his late mother's wish. Suru worked as a waiter in a bar, and his best friend, Vernon Monteiro, was a pizza delivery boy. Vinita "Vinnie" Sharma, a hairdresser, also wanted to become the best hip-hop dancer. Childhood friends from suburban Nalasopara, Mumbai, formed a team and participated in a national-level competition called Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin.
Unfortunately, during the grand finale of the competition, they were disqualified for copying the performance act of the Philippine All-Stars. The judges termed them "cheaters," and everyone went their separate ways to find jobs. Suru returned to work as a waiter, Vinnie rejoined a beauty parlor, and Vernon went back to being a delivery boy. However, they were constantly insulted as cheaters.
Suru wanted to remove the negative tag, and he planned to win a grander hip-hop competition in Las Vegas, the World Dance Championship, where the Philippine All Stars were highly popular. One day, Suru watched Vishnu, a rogue visitor, prove his dance skills to a betting visitor in the bar. Suru convinced him repeatedly to be their choreographer, and they auditioned for people and formed a team.
Vinod, a deaf-mute dancer, discovered Vinnie and Suru's hidden love for each other. They visited the qualifiers in Bangalore, where they were pre-insulted as cheaters, but they managed to win it after Vishnu begged the audience for one last chance for the team.
Although things were fine, Suru was heartbroken when Shetty Anna, the owner of the bar where he worked, refused to provide him financial support extending to Rs. 25 lakhs, something he had earlier promised publicly to Suru at the time of the Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin finale. Suru left the place, angry at Anna's insulting language for Vinnie.
Vishnu managed to get the money from Crocxz's uncle, whom he convinced after Suru lost hope when Vishnu got angry at his inability to arrange team funds. Later they prepared to go to Las Vegas, but Vinod learned from Vishnu himself that the latter had ulterior motives to go to Vegas. As a matter of fact, Vishnu had deliberately impressed Suru and friends to procure a way out for his plan.
After reaching Las Vegas, they won the qualifiers. Later, Vishnu left the hotel with the team's money to meet his son Manu, whose mother Swati, Vishnu's ex-wife, was married to another man and had moved on in life. His son Manu recognized him, his art, and his achievements, and Vishnu left with a contented heart.
ABCD 2 Review
ABCD2, short for Any Body Can Dance 2, is a Bollywood dance film and a sequel to the 2013 film that promises to raise the bar. It features Varun, who plays the protagonist and takes the audience on a tour of Las Vegas, where an international hip-hop competition is being held. The film also features Shraddha, who adds to the movie's visual appeal.
While the movie delivers plenty of energy and verve while hip-hopping, the plot falls flat. It attempts to gather one person from each Indian community, but the childish brawls and insult-trading goras are clichés that have been overused in desi cinema. Like most dance movies, whether made in the West or Bollywood, the dancing is professional, but the writing is amateur.
You will find yourself whooping and whistling when the dance sequences are on, but you may also stifle a yawn between the gravity-defying grooves. The music is a let-down, as is the Shraddha-Varun-Lauren Gottlieb love triangle. However, the patriotic fervor in the climax is touching, and it may even bring a lump to your throat. If only the movie had been 15 minutes shorter, the ‘Jai Ho’ sequence would have resonated more.
