Chiasson began his hockey career with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League (USHL) in 2007. He played for two seasons with the team before moving to Boston University to play college hockey. In his freshman year with the Terriers, he scored 15 goals and 20 assists, which earned him the title of the Hockey East Rookie of the Year.

After his sophomore year, Chiasson was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the second round, 38th overall, of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He played for the Stars' minor league affiliate, the Texas Stars, for two seasons before making his NHL debut on February 3, 2013. In his rookie season, he scored 6 goals and 7 assists in 57 games.

In the following season, Chiasson was traded to the Ottawa Senators as part of a trade that sent Jason Spezza to the Stars. He played one season with the Senators before being traded again, this time to the Calgary Flames.

Chiasson played one season with the Flames before becoming a free agent and signing a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals in 2018. He had a successful season with the Capitals, scoring 18 goals and 12 assists in 61 games, and helped the team win the Stanley Cup that year.

After his contract with the Capitals expired, Chiasson signed a two-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers in 2019.
