The series, created by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore, and Roshan Sethi, was acquired by Fox from Showtime in 2017. Fox ordered the project into a series in May 2017, with a 14-episode season order. The series premiere was a prelude to the NFC Championship Game between the Vikings and the Eagles.

The series was renewed for a fifth season in May 2021, with the premiere date set for September 21, 2021. The series was renewed for a sixth season in May 2022, with the premiere date set for September 20, 2022.

Is Bruce Greenwood Leaving 'The Resident'?

In the sixth season's finale, Bell is compelled to operate on Governor Betz as Dr. Ian Sullivan operates on his granddaughter Sammie. Bell experiences an MS flare-up throughout the procedure, which renders him unsteady. Bell fails to remain stable and continues with the surgery even though there is a staffing shortage in the operating room because AJ must help Ian, necessitating the intervention of Dr. Leela Devi.

She makes her mentor proud by completing the procedure with admirable excellence and tenacity. Kit elevates her to attending while Bell identifies her as Chastain's new leading surgeon. Bell decides to take a leave of absence to concentrate on his MS treatment and spend more time with his family.

Bell, one of Georgia's most well-known and accomplished surgeons, has always been committed to spending time with his family. After seeing Sammie's illness, he must have understood that he needed to spend more time with her, Jake Wong, and Kit.

Is Dr. Bell Leaving The Resident?

Bell isn't necessarily gone forever, though. Neither has he left Chastain nor retired as a surgeon. It is clear from their talk that he will continue to work at Chastain as a resident and intern mentor and teacher. The same will enable him to concentrate on improving himself without worrying about a renowned surgeon's demanding schedule. Given that Bell won't be at Chastain all the time, viewers must be concerned about Bruce Greenwood's departure from the medical drama. Bell's treatment, which separates him from Chastain, has prevented Greenwood from becoming a recurring character in the sixth season.

Does Bruce Greenwood Leave The Resident?

The decision FOX makes on the future of the medical drama will determine Bruce Greenwood's status in "The Resident." The show has not yet received a seventh-season order from the network. If the network decides to cancel the show, we can take comfort in Bell's potential rehabilitation when he is admitted into Devon Pravesh's trial.

"The fate of the show is somewhat caught up in the fact that it's owned by Disney but shown by Fox, which is not an ideal scenario," co-creator Amy Holden Jones told TVLine. Her statements make it abundantly clear that the network might ultimately decide how the series will develop. Jones and her other writers would be open to another "The Resident" season on FOX.

"The ratings are incredibly stable. We have a very core audience that just loves us, and if we have a chance, I'm sure we will continue to grow. It has the potential to go on and on, but whether it'll be given that shot, I don't know," Jones added. Regarding Bell, if the seventh season is approved, Greenwood's character in the episode has a tonne of potential for the actor to stay on the program's cast.
