They relocated to Collin County, Texas, in 1977, and started attending the Methodist Church of Lucas on a regular basis there. Montgomery met Gore, a middle school teacher, at a religious session and they quickly grew close. Montgomery had an adulterous romance with Gore, who shared a home with her two kids and her husband Allan.

Her spouse was away the day Gore was killed  When he couldn't get his wife on the phone, he asked their neighbors to look into it. They forced their way into the family home and found Gore's dead body.
