Mike Schmidt Career

Mike Schmidt played for the Philadelphia Phillies' farm system for two seasons and had a batting average of .263 with 34 home runs and 122 runs batted in. He was called up to the Phillies in September 1972, where he made his major league debut against the New York Mets and hit his first career home run against Montreal Expos pitcher Balor Moore. After the 1972 season, the Phillies traded Don Money to make room for Schmidt in their infield.

Schmidt's first full season in 1973 was not impressive, as he only batted .196 with 136 strikeouts. However, he demonstrated his power potential by hitting 18 home runs. In 1974, Schmidt had a breakout season, increasing his batting average to .282 and receiving his first All-Star nod. He also hit a ball off Houston Astros' pitcher Claude Osteen that hit a public address speaker suspended 117 feet above and 329 feet away from home plate, falling into center field.

Had the ball not hit the speaker, it would have traveled beyond 500 feet. Schmidt finished the season with a league-leading 36 home runs and 116 RBIs, helping the Phillies avoid a last-place finish in the National League East for the first time since 1970. He also set a record for third basemen with 404 assists.

Schmidt's batting average was below .200 through May 1975, but he had solid months of July and August that raised his average to .249 by the end of the season. He led the league in home runs for the second year in a row with 38. In 1976, Schmidt hit 12 home runs in the Phillies' first 15 games, including four in one game on April 17, becoming the 10th player in major league history to accomplish that feat. He drove in 107 runs, led the league in home runs for the third year in a row with 38, and won his first Gold Glove as the Phillies won their first division crown since division play started in 1969.

The Phillies won the NL East crown three years in a row, but were unsuccessful in the postseason, losing to Cincinnati's "Big Red Machine" in 1976 and to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1977 and 1978.

In 1979, the Phillies signed Pete Rose as a free agent, but they finished the season in fourth place in NL East. Schmidt broke the club record for home runs in a season with 45, surpassing Chuck Klein's 43 homers in 1929.
