Sonnen was initially issued five battery citations, but they were dismissed without prejudice in January, leaving the possibility for them to be refiled. Sonnen's trial is scheduled to begin on April 5, 2023, after he rejected a plea proposal for four misdemeanor battery counts in March 2022.

In December 2021, Chael Sonnen was arrested and faced five misdemeanor violence charges following an alleged incident at the Luxor Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Witnesses reported hearing Sonnen pounding on a hotel room door and getting into a fight with multiple people after it opened, prompting police to be called. He was filmed being led down a hotel corridor in handcuffs by Las Vegas police officers and issued citations for the offenses.
The charges were dismissed without prejudice on January 27, 2022, but Sonnen was later hit with one felony battery strangulation charge and ten misdemeanor battery charges, including allegedly choking one person and possibly striking a female.
Although five separate people accused him of violence, the accusations were eventually dropped. The trial is set to start on April 5, 2023, after Sonnen turned down a plea deal for four misdemeanor battery counts on March 30, 2022.

Despite challenging for both the UFC Light Heavyweight and UFC Middleweight Championships, Sonnen never won a major MMA world championship, earning him the title of one of the best mixed martial artists to have never achieved this feat.
He is also widely known as one of the greatest trash-talkers in the sport. Sonnen has also fought for other organizations such as World Extreme Cagefighting, Pancrase, and Bellator MMA. Since 2014, Sonnen has worked as an MMA analyst for ESPN, and in July 2016, he founded his own submission grappling promotion called Submission Underground (SUG).
