How was General Hospital created?

General Hospital, a popular American daytime television soap opera, was created by the husband-and-wife team of Frank and Doris Hursley. The show's original setting was an unnamed fictional city hospital. However, in the 1970s, it was renamed Port Charles, New York. John Beradino and Emily McLaughlin were the lead actors from the beginning of the show, and both remained with the series until their deaths in 1996 and 1991, respectively. Rachel Ames joined the cast a year later and is known for being the longest-serving actress on any ABC soap opera, having remained on the show from 1964 to 2007. General Hospital was the second soap opera to air on ABC, after the short-lived series "Road to Reality." In 1964, a sister soap opera called "The Young Marrieds" was created, but it only ran for two years due to low ratings. The show also spawned two spin-offs, the daytime series "Port Charles" (1997-2003) and the primetime series "General Hospital: Night Shift" (2007-2008). General Hospital was taped at The Prospect Studios and aired for 30 minutes until July 23, 1976. The series was later expanded to 45 minutes on July 26, 1976, and to a full hour on January 16, 1978.
