Newcastle are anxiously awaiting news of former midfielder Christian Atsu amid reports that he had been rescued after being trapped in rubble after the earthquakes which hit Turkey and Syria on Monday. The 31-year-old Ghana international, now playing his football with Turkish Super Lig side Hatayspor, was said to be missing after teammates and members of the club’s technical staff had reportedly been pulled from rubble. Several reports on Monday evening said Atsu, who was reportedly missing alongside the Hatayspor sporting director, Taner Savut, had been found alive, with Portuguese outlet A Bola saying he had sustained “injuries to his right foot and breathing difficulties”. There are reports that have come out from Turkey stating that Christian Atsu was found inside rubble and is alive. A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southeast Turkey and northern Syria early Monday morning. Another 7.5-magnitude jolt followed the deadly quake. At least 2,300 people have been confirmed dead in Turkey and Syria so far. Thousands of buildings have been reduced to rubble in both countries. The death toll is expected to rise as many people are still thought to be trapped beneath the rubble of the collapsed buildings.

Since the earthquake, dozens of countries and organisations have offered to assist with rescue efforts in northwest Syria and southeast Turkey. On Monday, Christian Atsu was taken to the hospital after being rescued from the rubble left by two major earthquakes in southern Turkey. More than 3,000 people were killed in Turkey and neighbouring Syria after earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.5 on the official magnitude scale struck in the early hours of Monday morning.

Turkey Earthquake

A massive 7.8 magnitude quake, one of the largest in 100 years, was followed by another massive 7.5 magnitude quake hours later. Survivors digging through the rubble of flattened homes with their bare hands were filmed pulling children to safety amid scenes of utter destruction. Tsunami warnings were issued along the Mediterranean coasts of Greece, Cyprus, and Italy, and shaking was felt as far away as Egypt and Iran. The confirmed death toll had risen to over 3,700 by the evening, but the WHO has warned that the figure could rise to more than 20,000 as rescuers discover more victims in the rubble. When the initial mega quake struck at 4 a.m. local time, most victims were asleep. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake was the largest in Turkey in "hundreds of years," according to geophysics professor Martin Mai. At a depth of about 15 miles, it struck near Gaziantep in eastern Turkey.
