Even though some elements are added up, it should not lose reality. "While it is based on actual events, it is not a documentary. Simply said, that is a unique type of narrative."I felt that the best outlet for this would be to free it up creatively, fictionalize the details, and let it take on a life of its own," she continued. The creative team went to great lengths to develop the fictional cult, the Morningstar, to make the show as real as possible. They even wrote their own cult Bible, the Book of Covenants. Polatin told Tudum, "I and my writers' room investigated all the cults. In an interview with Tudum, she said :

Although the series, which is based on her bestseller novel of the same name, is largely based on a genuine tale, the cult that is depicted is entirely fictitious. She said, "We made everything up,". For creating the cult, she says she had to undergo lots of research. For this she looked for many things and also she says she found it interesting to search for one. The entire process for the creation of a new cult was very new, as they had to build it from the scratch.  For this, she had to meet different people and discussed lots of people from the same field. She learned a lot of information from them until she had a clear idea & created one. Not only in creating the cult but every minute detail about the characters in the movie was taken care of. The psychiatrist in the movie was named Suzanne Mathis and the girl who ran away from home was Mae Dodd.

Devil in Ohio Plot

The story of a young girl named Mae, who escapes an evil organisation after having a pentagram carved into her back, is described as Devil in Ohio. During her stay in the hospital, Mae encounters psychiatrist Suzanne, who tries to win her confidence and make her feel secure. After that, Suzanne steps in as Mae's guardian and begins working with a detective on her case. Mae makes a slow-motion effort to blend in with the Mathis family as she gradually shares her experience of being raised in a cult. Mae wins Harvest Queen at the school dance and receives a bouquet of white roses in the final episode. These flowers are one of Mae's triggers; as soon as she gets them, she vanishes and rejoins the cult. In order to save Mae, Suzanne invades the cult and is successful in returning her to her family.

Did Mae Manipulate Suzanne to Save Her?

By switching the flowers, it is made evident that Mae is not entirely blameless, but it is open to discussion as to whether she had good or bad intentions. This could have been a desperate request to the family to save her. Although Suzanne had said she would never betray Mae, she agreed to send her away when Peter asked her to, since she was disturbing their family and wanted to leave. Mae was obviously upset by this because she had worked so hard to blend in with the family in the hopes that they would accept her and look out for her.
