Friday the 13th: The Game is a thrilling third-person survival horror game set in the 1980s within various locations surrounding the fictional Camp Crystal Lake from the iconic Friday the 13th film series. This game offers an asymmetrical multiplayer experience, allowing up to eight players to join a single game session. One player is randomly chosen to assume the role of Jason Voorhees, whose objective is to eliminate as many counselors as possible before time runs out. Playing as Jason provides unique time-limited abilities, such as the ability to sense nearby counselors and teleport across the map.
The remaining players control the counselors, who can temporarily incapacitate Jason using firecrackers, bear traps, and an assortment of weapons found throughout the game world. If certain conditions are met, a player may also take on the role of Tommy Jarvis, a playable character. The primary goal for counselors is to escape the map alive, either by completing side objectives collaboratively or surviving until the session ends. Alternatively, Jason can be defeated through a challenging "epic win condition" that requires careful teamwork and planning. To achieve this, a female character must find Jason's shack, wear Pamela Voorhees' sweater, and confront him as Tommy launches an attack, distracting Jason if his mask has been knocked off.
Although the game was originally designed as a multiplayer-only experience, an update introduced a single-player mode in the summer of 2017. This mode offers objective-based missions where players can control Jason and face AI-controlled camp counselor bots. Some missions are adapted from the films, while others present original scenarios. Gun, the game's developer, released a teaser trailer on October 27, 2017, hinting at a forthcoming game mode called "Paranoia." However, on February 1, 2018, they announced that development of the Paranoia mode would be put on hold to prioritize the introduction of dedicated servers.
The game features five primary maps, each based on locations from the first five films, and set in the respective time periods of those films. Players can engage in matches at Camp Crystal Lake (1979), Packanack Lodge (1984), Higgins Haven (1984), the Jarvis House (1984), and Pinehurst (1989). Initially, Camp Crystal Lake, Higgins Haven, and Packanack Lodge were the available maps, with the Jarvis House and Pinehurst becoming accessible in October 2017 and January 2018, respectively.
Release of Friday the 13th: The Game
The game's original release date was postponed from the fall and the multiplayer mode became available on May 26, 2017, while the campaign was released in the third quarter of 2017. Initially, the game was exclusively released digitally, but a physical copy was published on Friday, October 13, 2017. However, on June 11, 2018, Gun Media announced the cancellation of all future content updates and DLC for the game. This decision was made due to a dispute between Sean S. Cunningham and Victor Miller regarding rights, a lawsuit, and ownership of the original film, which made it impractical to continue releasing new content.
Despite this, the studio remains committed to providing maintenance patches for the game. The legal dispute was eventually resolved when Victor Miller won the lawsuit on September 28, 2018. On September 25, 2018, it was announced that Black Tower Studios would take over as the new development partner for the game, signaling a transition in the game's development. The Nintendo Switch version of the game, titled "Friday the 13th: Ultimate Slasher Switch Edition," was released on August 13, 2019. However, on November 10, 2020, the dedicated servers were reverted to peer-to-peer matchmaking due to Gun Media facing financial challenges with the game. Nevertheless, Wes Keltner and Gun Media have hinted at the possibility of developing more horror-based games in the future, promising further exciting experiences for horror game enthusiasts.
