Inventing Anna

Created and produced by Shonda Rhimes, "Inventing Anna" is a miniseries drama on American television. It is inspired by the real-life story of Anna Sorokin and the article in New York titled "How Anna Delvey Tricked New York's Party People" by Jessica Pressler. Julia Garner played the lead role of Anna Sorokin in the series, which premiered on Netflix on February 11, 2022. While the performances, especially Garner's, were highly praised, the series received mixed reviews from critics who criticized its inconsistent tone.

Is Inventing Anna a true story?

The Shonda Rhimes limited series "Inventing Anna" draws many of its wild events from the real-life experiences of Anna Delvey/Sorokin. However, the Netflix series openly acknowledges at the beginning of each episode that the content includes a significant amount of fiction in addition to the factual aspects of Anna's story. The lead character, Anna, portrayed by Julia Garner, ingratiates herself into the upper echelons of New York society and goes to great lengths to establish her own exclusive social club for artists, called The Anna Delvey Foundation (ADF). While much of the plot is based on true events, some elements are exaggerated or fabricated, and some are not even as strange as what actually happened.

Inventing Anna ending explained

The culmination of the series centers around Anna's trial, where we witness her in tears with her lawyer, Todd Spodek before she enters the courtroom. Ultimately, Anna is found guilty of eight out of the ten charges against her, but she is cleared of stealing money from her former friend Rachel Williams. After the trial, both Vivian and Todd appear to feel some sympathy towards the conwoman, with Todd going so far as to miss a family vacation to attend Anna's sentencing. However, tensions rise between Vivian and Todd as they accuse each other of profiting from Anna's story, with Vivian's article garnering more clicks and Todd's reputation as a lawyer improving. In the end, Anna is sentenced to four to twelve years in prison and we see her crying on the way to Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. The episode concludes by informing us that Anna was released from prison on February 11, 2021, but was taken into ICE custody a month later for overstaying her visa, where she is currently being held.

Inventing Anna plot

Anna Sorokin, a Russian-born woman, assumes the identity of Anna Delvey and successfully scams the elite members of New York City by posing as a wealthy German heiress. Her deception involves convincing people that she has access to a large fortune, and she uses this false persona to obtain cash, goods, and services worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Her ultimate objective is to establish a high-end art-centered club.

The season finale of Inventing Anna portrays the conclusion of Anna's trial as her punishment is determined. Despite her lawyer Todd's exceptional efforts to defend her, Anna is unable to escape a guilty verdict on eight counts. Anna feels doubly betrayed by Todd as she is still angry with him for making her appear ignorant and incapable of creating her own foundation in front of the jury. As a result, Anna is sentenced to four to 12 years in prison, leaving both Vivian and Todd feeling crestfallen and questioning their future career prospects. Both characters have become so deeply invested in Anna's life and trial that they are left without a sense of direction now that she has been sentenced.
