In 1989, he was called to become the pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Dallas, which had around 11,000 members at the time.
This came about after the church's founding pastor, Bill Weber, stepped down following an extramarital affair and unsuccessfully tried to regain his position. Weber then started a new church with the support of some of Prestonwood's wealthy members.
