The storyline of "Like a Dragon Gaiden" unfolds between the significant events of Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (2016), Yakuza: Like a Dragon (2020), and the upcoming Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (2024). Focusing on the iconic protagonist, Kazuma Kiryu, this game immerses players in his new journey through the vibrant cities of Osaka and Yokohama while operating incognito as a secret agent.

Is Like A Dragon Gaiden Turn-Based?

"Like a Dragon Gaiden" is a game that came out three years after "Yakuza: Like a Dragon."  In "Like a Dragon Gaiden," the combat is not turn-based like it was in "Yakuza: Like a Dragon." Instead, it's real-time combat, which means you don't take turns to attack your enemies. This is in line with the combat style of previous games featuring the character Kazuma Kiryu.

You can switch between his regular Yakuza-style combat, his typical bike-swinging face-punching style, and a brand-new Agent style. In this Agent style, he can use some cool gadgets, like a wrist-web attack similar to Spider-Man. It's not what you'd normally expect from the legendary Dragon of Dojima, but that's probably the idea - to keep things fresh and surprising.

So, if you didn't like the RPG-style turn-based combat in "Yakuza: Like a Dragon," you'll be happy to know that "Like a Dragon Gaiden" offers real-time combat. It's a change that might appeal to those who prefer more action-packed gameplay. However, this also raises another question about what other surprises the game might have in store.

Like a Dragon Gaiden Gameplay

In the gameplay of "Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name," you take control of the character Kazuma Kiryu. As a player, you'll get to explore two different districts: the Sotenbori district in Osaka and the Isezaki Ijincho district in Yokohama. These locations offer diverse and vibrant settings for your adventures.

In addition to these main areas, there is a third location known as the Castle. This place serves as a hub area where you can engage in various side activities and missions. These activities include fun minigames such as karaoke, Pocket Circuit racing, cabaret club management, and fighting arena challenges. These activities provide a break from the main story and let you have some entertaining diversions. A new character named Akame plays a role in the game as an informant, providing Kiryu with sub-missions and additional tasks to complete. This adds depth to the gameplay and allows players to explore different aspects of the story.

Kiryu, the main character, has access to two distinct fighting styles. The Yakuza style is reminiscent of his classic brawler combat, offering an aggressive and powerful fighting style. On the other hand, the Agent style is described as focusing on absolute speed and precision, relying on high-tech gadgets to gain an edge in combat.

The game also features a nostalgic element with several Master System games that Kiryu can play within the game. These classic titles include games like Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Alien Syndrome, Enduro Racer, and more. These classic games offer a nostalgic experience for players and add an extra layer of enjoyment to the gameplay.

The announcement for "Like a Dragon Gaiden" came in September 2022, with a cinematic trailer. It was revealed that this game would be a bit shorter in length compared to the mainline entries, estimated to offer around 10-20 hours of gameplay. Still, players could expect plenty of activities to enjoy. In early 2023, a unique event took place where live-action models were chosen to appear as hostesses in the cabaret club minigame.
