All Saints Day History

In the early years, when the Roman Empire was persecuting Christians, many of them were martyred for their faith. To honor these martyrs, the Church established special days. For instance, in 607, Emperor Phocas gave the Roman Pantheon temple to the pope. The pope removed the statues of pagan gods and dedicated the Pantheon to "all saints" who had died during the first 300 years after Christ.

They collected the bones of many martyrs from different graves and placed them in the rededicated Pantheon church. Because there were so many martyrs, they decided to celebrate them all on one day. In the following century, Pope Gregory III changed the date to what we now know as November 1. People used to prepare for this celebration with a vigil on the night before, which became Halloween. This might be related to the influence of the Celtic festival called Samhain, which was still observed by some Christians in places like Ireland, Britain, Scotland, and Wales.

How to Observe All Saints Day?

All Saints' Day is a Christian celebration of all the holy people, called saints, who are believed to be very close to God. In the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions, saints are thought to have the power to ask God to help people who pray to them. To celebrate this day, people light candles and attend church services.

In some places, like Louisiana, people also clean and decorate the graves of their loved ones with flowers on All Saints' Day. A priest may bless the graves in a special ceremony. Louisiana even considers November 1 a state holiday because of its large Roman Catholic population.
