At Yale University, Peter Bergman pursued a degree in economics while actively contributing to the campus humor magazine, The Yale Record. As a Carnegie Fellow, he taught economics and also took part in the Eugene O'Neill Playwriting Fellowship at the Yale School of Drama. During this time, Bergman collaborated with Austin Pendleton on two musicals for the Yale Dramatic Association, where he crossed paths with acting student Philip Proctor. He further distinguished himself as a Woodrow Wilson Scholar.
Following his college years, Bergman had the opportunity to work with notable figures such as Tom Stoppard, Derek Marlowe, Piers Paul Read, and Spike Milligan. In 1973, he performed alongside Philip Proctor separately from the rest of the Firesign Theatre, and their collaborations continued intermittently until 1990.
The Firesign Theatre came into existence through Bergman's radio show, Radio Free Oz, which aired on KPFK. According to Bergman, the genesis of the Firesign Theatre can be traced back to July 24, 1966, when he started his show on KPFK. Through his connections with the station, including David Ossman and Phil Austin, as well as his meeting with Phil Proctor in Los Angeles, the group formed.
