Charlotte's naivety was her most alluring quality for George, who viewed her as a blank page to write on, even though she was a well-educated and intellectually curious teenager.
On September 8, 1761, only six hours after Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz arrived in England, she wed King George III. As it turned out, the couple was an excellent match for each other. They shared a love of music, and Charlotte had a discerning taste that led her to discover the young Mozart, whom she invited to perform in London.
They also shared a passion for nature, with George showing a keen interest in agriculture, while Charlotte focused on botany. They had 15 children together, and their marriage lasted for over three decades, as evidenced by Charlotte's heartfelt 1797 letter expressing her profound joy and affection for George.

The marriage of George and Charlotte was not without its difficulties, primarily due to King George's struggles with mental illness. During the 1700s, there was no specific term for his condition, but historians now believe he suffered from bipolar disorder and chronic mania, possibly exacerbated by the arsenic prescribed by his doctor.
Over the course of his reign, he experienced at least five documented episodes of mental illness. Signs of depression were already present when he was 27, and following a severe physical illness in 1765, he struggled with decision-making and sleeplessness. In 1788, acute mania was triggered by jaundice, and he exhibited obsessive talking, irrational behavior, and a tendency to fiddle with handkerchiefs. His condition worsened, and he was often restrained and suffered from delirium. Charlotte remained a devoted wife, even after he was declared permanently insane in 1811, and she became his permanent guardian until her death in 1818.
