Sinbad, an American stand-up comedian, and actor was born on November 10, 1956, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, to Louise and a Baptist minister, Dr. Donald Beckley Adkins Sr. He grew up with five siblings named Donna, Dorothea, Mark, Michael, and Donald Jr. His paternal grandmother was of Irish descent. Sinbad attended Benton Harbor High School and graduated in 1974. After that, he attended the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado, from 1974 to 1978, where he played basketball for two seasons. Sinbad became famous in the 1990s for his HBO specials and appearances on several television series, such as playing Coach Walter Oakes in A Different World (1987–1991) and as David Bryan on The Sinbad Show (1993–1994). He also starred in several films, including Necessary Roughness, Houseguest, First Kid, Jingle All the Way, Good Burger, and Planes. 

What Happened to Sinbad?

Two years ago, Sinbad, the beloved American actor, and comedian suffered from an ischemic attack that caused a blood clot to travel from his heart to his brain. Although his family received a hopeful prognosis at first, Sinbad experienced another blood clot the next day. After undergoing a second surgery, his brain began to swell, and a craniotomy was performed to alleviate the pressure. It was during this procedure that surgeons discovered a brain bleed. Sadly, Sinbad has been on a ventilator since then, and two years have now passed since his debilitating stroke.

In May 2021, Sinbad was admitted to the California Rehabilitation Institute to begin "intense therapy" after months of hospitalization and multiple surgeries. Despite the long road to recovery, he persevered, and after nine months, he was able to return home in July 2021. Recently, in November 2022, his family shared a photo on Instagram that showed the Michigan-born actor and comedian making significant progress in his rehabilitation journey.
