Is the Blind Side Based on a True Story?

While The Blind Side is a film based on a true story, it takes creative liberties that may have negative effects, as is the case with Michael Oher's portrayal in the movie. The film's depiction of Oher's high school background isn't entirely accurate, despite him having academic difficulties. In the movie, Oher is shown as a disinterested student without any athletic abilities or interests before meeting the Tuohy family. However, the reality is that he participated in basketball, football, and track and field, making his story even more impressive.

What is The Blind Side Based on?

Michael Oher, a seventeen-year-old who has been in foster care due to his mother's drug addiction, finds himself enrolled in Wingate Christian School with the help of Burt Cotton, the football coach, who is impressed by Michael's size and athleticism. Michael is later befriended by a younger student, Sean Tuohy Jr. ("SJ"), and his mother, Leigh Anne, who offer to let him sleep on their couch after seeing him shivering in the cold without adequate clothing. Michael eventually becomes a member of the Tuohy family, and Leigh Anne seeks to become his legal guardian. Michael improves his grades enough to play football at school, and with the help of Miss Sue, a private tutor, he qualifies to play at the college level.

Leigh Anne has a face-to-face conversation with Michael's mother about adopting him, but Michael later confronts Leigh Anne about her motives and runs away to find his biological mother. He battles with a gang leader who threatens to go after Leigh Anne and Collins, Leigh Anne's daughter. Michael chooses to attend the University of Mississippi and is drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. The film ends with information about and photos of the real Tuohy family and Michael Oher.

Where Did the Blind Side Take Place?

Atlanta International School and The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, Georgia, served as filming locations for the school scenes in The Blind Side, with several of their students appearing as extras. The film premiered on November 17, 2009, in New York City and New Orleans before opening in theatres across the United States and Canada on November 20 of the same year.

During his audition for the role of Michael Oher, Quinton Aaron was working as a security guard between acting gigs. After leaving a card with his contact information, he offered to work as a security guard on set in case he was not selected for the role. To prepare for his role, Aaron trained with the Georgia Tech football team in the spring of 2009.
