In 2023, Disney's focus shifted back towards profitability rather than solely gaining subscribers. This has led to the adoption of a traditional release window for certain films, similar to the strategy employed before the pandemic. Movies like "Avatar: The Way Of Water" and "Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania" now follow a longer theatrical release before becoming available on digital and physical home media, such as DVDs. Due to this shift in strategy, predicting the exact arrival of new films on Disney+ has become more challenging.

"The Little Mermaid" from 2023 will be joining Disney+ on September 6th, after more than 100 days from its theatrical release. Disney's approach to film releases has evolved, emphasizing profitability and a traditional release window for some movies, making it harder to predict the precise timeline for their appearance on the streaming platform.

The Little Mermaid 2023

"The Little Mermaid" is a 2023 American musical romantic fantasy film directed by Rob Marshall and written by David Magee. Co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Lucamar Productions, and Marc Platt Productions, the movie is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1989 animated film of the same name, which was loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's 1837 fairy tale. The film features Halle Bailey as the mermaid princess Ariel, alongside a cast including Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Javier Bardem, and Melissa McCarthy. The story follows Ariel's fascination with the human world, leading her to make a deal with the sea witch Ursula to trade her voice for legs to impress Prince Eric, whom she saved from a shipwreck.

Plans for the remake were confirmed in 2016, and Rob Marshall was announced as the director in 2017. The cast, including Bailey, Hauer-King, McCarthy, Bardem, Diggs, Tremblay, and Awkwafina, signed on between 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, production was delayed but eventually took place in England and Italy from January to July 2021. The film features music composed by Alan Menken, who also worked on the original film, along with new songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Premiering in May 2023 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, "The Little Mermaid" hit theaters on May 26, receiving a mixed reception. While praised for the cast's performances and musical sequences, criticism was directed at the visual effects and character designs. Despite this, the film achieved substantial box office success, grossing over $567 million worldwide against a budget of $250 million. It ranks as the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2023 and is among Disney's pricier live-action adaptations, standing as the seventh highest-grossing readaptation in the company's history. The film is dedicated to Howard Ashman, who played a significant role in the original film's songs and production.

The Little Mermaid Plot

Ariel, a mermaid princess and the youngest daughter of King Triton, is deeply intrigued by the human world despite her father's strict prohibition due to her mother's tragic death at human hands. One night, she saves Prince Eric from a shipwreck and falls for him, but leaves before he regains consciousness.

King Triton learns of Ariel's actions and confronts her. In her grotto, he destroys her collection of human objects, leaving her frustrated. Ursula, a sea witch and Triton's estranged sister, offers Ariel a deal to become human temporarily in exchange for her voice. Ariel accepts, with the condition that she must receive true love's kiss to stay human.

Ariel becomes human with the help of Flounder, Sebastian, and Scuttle. She meets Eric, and they bond over shared interests. Ursula, in human form, manipulates events to make Eric fall for her. Ariel regains her voice and disrupts Ursula's plans, but Ursula grows in power and summons a storm.

Triton sacrifices himself to save Ariel, but Ursula's plan unravels. Ariel impales Ursula, and Triton is revived. Ariel returns to the sea, unhappy without Eric. Triton, on Sebastian's advice, transforms her into a human permanently. She reunites with Eric, and the two embark on a new journey together, supported by their parents and their respective worlds.
