Is The Movie Alice Based On A True Story?

Indeed, "Alice" is based on a true story. The story is based on history of black Americans still being enslaved after the Emancipation Proclamation. Krystin Ver Linden wrote and directed the film after being inspired by Mae Louise Miller, a former slave, and her family's experiences. Krystin's mother sent her a People Magazine article in which Mae discusses her life in servitude and how she and her family eventually gained freedom. "Her journey out and what she did with her life when she got out was truly inspiring," Krystin shared with the Los Angeles Times. Over the 20th century, several cases came to light across the United States that exposed how some modern-day plantations were still functioning and enslaving people. These enslaved individuals had no access to information channels like television or radio and were unaware of the illegality and injustice of what was happening to them. Therefore, the story of what Mae and her family went through is enough to shatter one's worldview.

Alice Movie Ending Explained

We are aware that Alice, as well as her family, lover, and others, were subject to torture by Paul and his family. They were also kept unaware that they were legally free, and no one had the right to keep them as "domestics." After she escapes and discovers that slavery has been abolished, Alice decides to seek revenge on Paul and free her family. In the film's final scene, we witness Alice shooting Paul in the legs and leaving him tied to a stake in the ground, mirroring the way he had previously treated her. Her act of revenge is evident, but can we judge her for it? Is it justified to point a gun at Paul given all the suffering that she and her family had endured for years? In judging Alice, we may also judge ourselves. However, the fact that she doesn't kill Paul provides us with the catharsis that indicates her fundamentally good nature. It may be why Joseph, the love of her life, returns to her. The film is appropriately titled after the protagonist since she is both the subject and the moral compass of the movie.

Synopsis Of Alice Movie

Mae and her six siblings were born to Cain and Lela Wall and were forced into servitude near Gillsburg, Mississippi. They spent many years working without pay and under the constant threat of whippings, sexual assault, and even death. Their duties included picking cotton, cleaning houses, milking cows, and other chores. The Walls were handed over from one white family to another and were subjected to peonage. This illegal practice forced many black people to work to clear off debts, the existence of which was dubious at best. To settle their supposed debts, families had to work for those who claimed to own them without receiving any compensation. Although such instances decreased over time, the few that remained were as brutal as one can imagine. "The whip would wrap around your body and knock you down," Mae's sister Annie recounted the family's horrifying experiences.
