Johnny Plot

Jan Kaczkowski is a compassionate priest who refuses to give up on people whom others have abandoned. He works tirelessly to help those in need, even when his hospice is in a state of disarray due to a lack of staff and medicine. Undeterred, Jan takes out a loan to open a hospice of his own, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his mission.

Despite being diagnosed with cancer and given a bleak prognosis of only six months to live, Jan remains determined to ensure that his hospice continues to operate effectively. He prepares for the future by establishing systems and ensuring that those under his care are well looked after.

Jan faces opposition from the Archbishop, who is against the hospice. But Jan refuses to back down, arguing that it is based on the church's teachings, not the opinions of individual priests. He also reminds the Archbishop of his own personal issues, including alcoholism and conflicts of interest with other properties.

Meanwhile, Patryk is a convicted thief who has been ordered to do community service at Jan's hospice. If he performs well, his suspended sentence will be reduced.

Patryk's journey at the hospice is not without its challenges, but Jan's approach to him brings a smile to his face. Though they don't become instant friends, Jan's non-patronizing manner comforts Patryk. At first, he's repulsed by the work, but Jan's pep talk about responsibility inspires him. As his mentor, Jan has Patryk's best interests at heart, a new experience for him. In time, Patryk becomes an essential part of the hospice, forming friendships with the residents. Witnessing the death of Agnieszka, a young mother, affects him deeply. He realizes that he's lived recklessly, thinking he has nothing to lose, but Agnieszka's death shows him that he still has much to live for. Patryk begins to transform, but not everyone believes in his change.

Johnny Ending Explained

One resident, Roman, tests Patryk's integrity by giving him money and observing his actions. To Roman's surprise, Patryk handles the task responsibly. Hania, another resident, initially appears harsh towards Patryk, but her tough love teaches him manners, something he never learned growing up. They eventually form a close bond, and she gives him a ring, instructing him to propose with it. When Hania dies, Patryk is left bewildered and grieving. Jan tells him that it's essential to tell those on the verge of death that it's okay to let go without burdening them with the expectations of those left behind.

Patryk discovers a new passion for cooking and finds that he has skills as a chef. Along the way, he meets and begins dating Zaneta, and his life takes a positive turn. He now has responsibilities he cares about, which makes him a better man. Meanwhile, Jan's hospice promotion on TV is successful, but he receives news that his tumor has returned. Jan's family is left in tears, but he was prepared for the news. As Patryk's hearing approaches, Jan testifies positively that Patryk has turned his life around, but the court sends him back to jail. Jan doesn't give up and successfully gets Patryk's sentence reduced. Upon his release, Patryk returns to the hospice, attends a chef course sponsored by Jan, and discovers that Zaneta is pregnant. Though she rejected his previous proposal before jail, their life together is starting anew.

Jan arranges an interview for Patryk at a prestigious restaurant, hoping he would get the job of a chef. But Patryk skips the interview to threaten Roman's son into paying his father a visit. Jan confronts Patryk, and they have a heated argument. Unfortunately, Roman is on his deathbed, and his son arrives to find that he had passed away the previous night. Patryk tries to reach out to Jan, but he collapses and is rushed to the hospital. Sadly, Jan passes away while Patryk was by his side, telling him about the child they were expecting.

Jan was a selfless man who touched the lives of everyone he met. His death was a significant loss not only for those he helped but also for those who knew him as a person. Despite this, Patryk finds direction and learns that he is capable of being more than just a lost cause. He will make something of himself, thanks to Jan's faith in him. Patryk's story is unique, but we can all learn from Jan's example and have faith in those around us. In doing so, we can honor Jan's legacy and ensure that his death was not in vain.

Johnny 2023 review

Although the movie's narration by Patryk can be distracting and time is portrayed in a disjointed way, it's worth appreciating the series of vignettes that make up the film. The story is a classic one of a good person getting caught up in bad things but finding redemption through the influence of an even better person. The script doesn't leave any room for questioning whether Patryk deserves redemption or if Jan is as saintly as he seems, but this is not a drawback as the sequences come one after another with no pause, creating a seamless and wholesome story.

The movie is mainly about Patryk learning to love himself by working with people in hospice care, who are the hardest people to love. Each vignette teaches him a new lesson, softening his disposition and transforming him into a character you can't help but cheer for. Jan, played by Ogrodnik, is dying from terminal brain cancer, yet he maintains his position as the voice of reason, comfort, and hope in every scene. Ogrodnik's portrayal of Jan is steady and impactful, making him a character that the audience wishes there were more of in the world.

Although the cinematography is nothing special, the final moment featuring Ogrodnik alone on-screen is a standout moment that elevates the film. Based on a real priest, Jan is portrayed as the kind of person the world needs more of, and the movie inspires viewers to try to be more like him. In the end, Johnny is a simple but powerful film that allows the goodness of two people to speak for itself as they face the challenge of caring for the dying.
