In 1998, Valerie Adams met her coach Kirsten Hellier, a former javelin thrower, and they formed a coaching partnership that lasted for 11 years. Adams rose to prominence in 2001 when she won the World Youth Championships with a throw of 16.87 m.
The following year, she became the World Junior champion with a throw of 17.73 m and secured a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games with a throw of 17.45 m. At the age of eighteen, Adams finished fifth at the 2003 World Championships. In her debut Olympics in 2004, she finished seventh, although two athletes were later disqualified, and she had recently undergone an appendectomy.
