Who is Red Byron?
Red Byron, whose real name was Robert Nold Byron, was an American car racer. He did really well in the early years of NASCAR, which is a type of car racing. He was the first champion in NASCAR's Modified series in 1948, and also the first champion in the Strictly Stock series, which is like the earlier version of today's NASCAR Cup Series, in 1949. People think he was one of the best drivers of his time, along with another driver named Bob Flock.
Red Byron was born in Plasterco, Virginia. He started racing cars in the early 1940s. During World War II, he was part of the United States Army Air Corps and got badly hurt in a bombing mission. After the war, he went back to racing and quickly became one of the best drivers in the whole country.
In 1948, Byron joined the newly-created NASCAR Modified Series. He won the championship in his first year, making him the very first champion in any division of NASCAR. The next year, he moved up to the Strictly Stock series, which later became the NASCAR Cup Series. He won the championship in the first season of this series in 1949, making him the first champion in the top division of NASCAR.
Byron kept racing in NASCAR until he died in a plane crash in 1960. In 2018, he was put into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, which is a special place for the most important and successful people in NASCAR history.
