In his freshman season playing for the Michigan Wolverines in 2022-23, Howard had an impressive college career. The season began on November 7, 2022, with a victory over Purdue Fort Wayne, where Howard made a significant contribution by scoring 21 points in his debut. This performance made him the first Wolverine player to debut with 20 or more points since Jamal Crawford achieved the feat in 1999.
Howard's exceptional start to the season earned him recognition as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the week ending November 13, 2022.
