As Realmuto rounded second base, he noticed that no one was covering third base. However, first baseman C.J. Cron quickly retrieved the ball and threw it to third baseman Ryan McMahon, who tagged Realmuto's hand, causing the injury.

The trainer examined Realmuto's hand after the inning, and although he continued to play, he was eventually replaced by Garrett Stubbs in the seventh inning. If Realmuto requires time on the injured list, the Phillies will need to add another catcher to their 40-man roster.

Rafael Marchan, who is currently on the 60-day injured list due to a right hamate fracture, is not eligible to return until June. Realmuto has been performing exceptionally well this season, currently holding a .285/.305/.488 slash line with 16 extra-base hits.

According to Phillies coach Rob Thomson, X-rays showed no fractures, and the swelling on Realmuto's finger has decreased. He is not expected to play on the following day but is likely to return to the field on Sunday.

What Happened to JT Realmuto?

During Friday night's game against the Rockies at Coors Field, Phillies All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto left the game in the seventh inning and was replaced by a pinch-hitter.

He had apparently injured his right (throwing) hand two innings earlier when he slid headfirst into third base. Shortly after, it was announced at the stadium that Realmuto had suffered a sprained right pinkie finger.

In the fifth inning, Rockies starter Austin Gomber had retired the first 14 Phillies hitters he faced, and Realmuto ended the perfect game bid with a double. Despite the throw to the infield appearing to roll free, Realmuto attempted to reach third base.

However, he was thrown out and was visibly in pain as he returned to the dugout. Although Garrett Stubbs was prepared to replace him, Realmuto continued to catch for two more innings before being substituted in the seventh.
