Jubilee ending explained

The exact moment that marks the start of the downfall in Jubilee is difficult to identify, but it may be when Srikant Roy (played by Prosenjit Chatterjee) witnesses the seizure of Roy Talkies’ assets, which was initiated by his former protégé Binod Das (played by Aparshakti Khurana), whom he had mentored, protected, and trained to become India's biggest superstar, Madan Kumar.

Roy, who seemed invincible until then, finally realizes that he has been betrayed and defeated, and decides to end his life. However, before doing so, he hands over incriminating photographs of Das beating the "real" Madan Kumar, also known as Jamshed Khan (played by Nandish Singh Sandhu), which ultimately led to his death, to his wife Sumitra (played by Aditi Rao Hydari).

This final act of giving the photos to Sumitra could either be seen as Roy's way of seeking redemption for the harm he has caused her, or as a way to get back at Das for his treachery.

Jubilee series plot

One month before India's Independence and Partition, Shrikant Roy, the legitimate owner of Roy Talkies studio in Bombay, is searching for a newcomer to play the protagonist in his latest film, Sunghursh. He plans to give the selected person the pseudonym "Madan Kumar." A theatre actor named Jamshed Khan, who is having an extramarital affair with Sumitra Kumari, a high-profile Bollywood actress and Roy's wife, is selected for the role.

Binod Das, Roy's right-hand man and projector boy, is sent to Lucknow to bring both Jamshed and Sumitra back to the studio. On the train ride to Lucknow, Binod meets Jay Khanna, Jamshed's best friend, and a playwright whose family owns a theatre company in Karachi. He tries to convince Sumitra to go back to Bombay with him, but she remains firm in her decision.

Binod meets Jamshed, who is using a different alias while acting in a theatre production of Hamlet. Binod indirectly threatens Jamshed with the consequences of not acting in Roy's new film. However, Jamshed secretly sneaks out of the theatre to go to Karachi by train.

As riots break out due to the announcement of Partition, Jamshed is unable to find a ride to the train station. Binod offers him a ride, but Jamshed mistakenly discovers Binod's true identity. Binod plans to act in Sungursh himself and beats Jamshed unconscious.

However, a group of rioters come upon them, and Binod manages to escape before he is found by Jay. The rioters kill Jamshed, mistaking him for being a Hindu, which is witnessed by both Binod and Jay. Upon going back to Bombay, Binod tells everyone that Jamshed went to Karachi. When questioned by Roy, he succeeds in distracting him by auditioning in front of him. Binod is selected for the role of Madan Kumar.

Meanwhile, Jay, whose family has lost their theatre company and house in Karachi, comes to Bombay as a refugee. He falls in love with the courtesan, Niloufer. His script, Taxi Driver, gets rejected by Roy solely because the hero is poor. He then tries to narrate it to Roy's financier, Shamsher Walia, but gets rejected again, as Walia does not want to produce films.

After Jay and Roy get into a feud, Jay confronts Walia for his inability to take risks. Walia agrees and produces Jay's film, helping him create his own studio. Jay and Walia are eventually pitted against Roy and Madan Kumar.Madan tries to get Niloufer on his side by casting her in his next film, Raj Mahal.

They begin an affair, but Jay learns about it and has a public spat with Madan. Jay takes Sumitra Kumari as the heroine for his next film, Baiju Awara. The film becomes a hit for its instant connection with the middle class, while Raj Mahal flops badly, as Roy changed the story at the last minute to suit Madan and Niloufer's real-life scandal.

Pratap Singh, a teacher who had helped Jay after the partition and now works in his studio, wants to get him married to his daughter Kiran. But Jay still loves Niloufer and comforts her after her split from Madan. He is also fascinated by the new technology of cinemascope that is about to be introduced by Roy.

Roy invites him to work with him, but Walia is against it as the film would involve American technology, but Jay agrees with the Soviet government. Roy kills himself, but before doing so, he prepares an envelope for Sumitra. Sumitra finds photographs in it that prove that Madan killed

Jubilee review

Vikramaditya Motwane's Jubilee has some notable shortcomings, including thick and heavy dialogues, bland music, and convenient plot twists, which can leave viewers feeling overstretched and underwhelmed. However, despite its flaws, the show manages to leave a lasting impression on its audience, thanks in part to some of the most exceptional performances ever seen in a Hindi series.

While it's true that binge-watching all ten one-hour episodes in a single night may contribute to the show's lingering impact, it's worth noting that Prime Video is releasing Jubilee in two sets of five episodes, with the first five arriving on April 7 and the rest on April 14. Although long series with lengthy episodes have been done in the past, Jubilee's slow burn quality doesn't work in its favor.

The show takes its time exploring the story of a man's murder and another's guilt at the center of it, delving into the world of filmmaking in post-Independence India, star-making film studios, a refugee from Pakistan with big dreams, a sex worker seeking new opportunities, and even the geopolitical tensions between Russians and Americans vying for influence in India.

Despite the abundance of events and occurrences in Jubilee, only a handful of them can justify the prolonged duration of the series.
