Lord Tengen is an ancient sorcerer who possesses immortality and has lived since the Nara period. Although Tengen can live indefinitely, their physical body still ages and changes over time. Every 500 years, when Tengen reaches a certain stage of immortality, their body initiates a transformation process in an attempt to evolve into a higher being. However, this transformation comes at a cost—the user's self-awareness and will to exist diminish, leaving them as a mere shell of their former self.
Because of the potential disaster this evolution could bring to Jujutsu High and the world, both Tengen and the higher-ups at the institution were concerned. To prevent such a future, Tengen must merge with a capable Star Plasma Vessel during each evolution cycle. By doing so, Tengen can rewrite their body's information and halt the evolution until the next 500 years.
Star Plasma Vessels are young women who possess the potential to aid Tengen in refreshing their immortality through merging. Riko Amanai, introduced in Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, exhibits high potential as a vessel. Thus, Tengen sends Gojo and Geto to retrieve her so that he can merge with her and maintain his immortality.
It's important to note that not all vessels are equal, as each possesses varying levels of potential compared to others. Additionally, these vessels have the ability to communicate with each other even if one person has already merged with Tengen.
What is a Star Plasma Vessel In Jujutsu Kaisen?
In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen's second season, Jujutsu High School has a powerful sorcerer known as Master Tengen, who is responsible for maintaining the barriers around both school locations. Despite being over 1200 years old, Master Tengen is not immortal in the conventional sense. Instead, every five hundred years, as his body begins to deteriorate, he merges with a person known as the "Star Plasma Vessel" to "rewrite his body's information."
This merging process allows Master Tengen to refresh his cells and extend his life repeatedly. However, the drawback for the chosen Star Plasma Vessel is that the merge with Master Tengen is essentially fatal for them. According to the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom page, Star Plasma Vessels are young women who possess the necessary potential to facilitate the refreshment of immortality by merging with the user, in this case, Master Tengen.
Each vessel has different levels of potential, and interestingly, they can communicate with each other even if one person has already merged with the immortal being. In the original Jujutsu Kaisen manga series, only two Star Plasma Vessels are known: Yuki Tsukumo, a Special Grade sorcerer, and Riko Amanai, who becomes the main focus of the second season of the anime.
Who is Riko Amanai in Jujutsu Kaisen season 2?
In Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, Riko Amanai is introduced as a 14-year-old student at Renchoku Girls' Junior High and serves as the Star Plasma Vessel. Known for her outspoken and feisty nature, Riko is deeply committed to her role as the vessel, viewing it more as an obligation rather than a personal choice. She is willing to sacrifice her own life for the sake of Master Tengen.
Riko's dedication to her role may stem from her childhood trauma. Tragically, her parents died in a traffic collision when she was young, and she has since been raised by her guardian, Misato Kuroi, with whom she shares a close bond. In the second season of the Jujutsu Kaisen TV series produced by MAPPA, Riko Amanai is voiced by Japanese actress Anna Nagase.

The announcement for the anime adaptation was made in the 52nd issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump on November 25, 2019. The anime is planned to run for two continuous courses, covering the "Hidden Inventory/Premature Death" and "Shibuya Incident" story arcs from the manga.
The first story arc focuses on the early days of Satoru Gojo, a young sorcerer, and his partnership with Suguru Geto and other students from Jujutsu Academy as they combat curses. The second story arc takes place several years later, with Gojo as an adult, as his students face a massive onslaught of curses attacking Shibuya.
On February 12, 2022, a second season of the anime was announced. Shōta Goshozono took over as the series director, replacing Sunghoo Park. Sayaka Koiso and Tadashi Hiramatsu were responsible for character design, while Yoshimasa Terui returned as the sole composer. The second season premiered on July 6, 2023.
The opening theme song, titled "Where Our Blue Is" was performed by Tatsuya Kitani, while the ending theme song, titled "Light" (燈, Akari), was performed by Soushi Sakiyama. The streaming rights for the series outside of Asia have been licensed by Crunchyroll.
