Who Is Kelly Catlin?

Kelly was born as a triplet in Arden Hills, Minnesota on November 3, 1995. She, her sister Christine, and her brother Colin had always been a superpowered trio. Kelly's intensity and competitiveness always stood out among the three children, who were all outstanding athletes and students. When she was a teenager, Colin introduced her to cycling, and she has never looked back. Cycling was a great outlet for her competitiveness and perfectionism. Kelly began dominating high school competitions against her peers, and before long she was beating members of the University of Minnesota men's cycling team while still in high school. The cycling world took notice. She attended a US Olympic Committee camp in 2014 and was chosen to train for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Caitlin's brother Colin (they're triplets, along with sister Christine) confirmed on Facebook that his sister died by suicide. "She's the one person I had shared almost my entire life with, and I shall miss her terribly," he wrote.

“There isn’t a minute that goes by that we don’t think of her and think of the wonderful life she could have lived,” her father, Mark Catlin told VeloNews. “There isn’t a second in which we wouldn’t freely give our lives in exchange for hers. The hurt is unbelievable.”

From 2016 to 2018, Catlin, who was also pursuing a graduate degree in Computational Mathematics at Stanford, won three consecutive world championships with the US women's pursuit team. She also competed on the road with the Rally UHC Pro Cycling Team. Catlin described balancing her cycling and personal goals as "like juggling with knives."

Catlin's sister Christine, told the Washington Post that Kelly was "a really special person—kind, funny, empathetic, and talented at literally everything she did. She just felt like she couldn’t say no to everything that was asked of her and this was her only escape.”

She also stated that her sister began to struggle with her mental health last year, following a cycling accident in which she broke her arm and suffered a concussion. “She couldn’t train as well as she used to,” Christine Catlin told the Post. “She had really bad headaches and was sensitive to light. Then she tried to commit suicide in January the same way. We called police the moment we got the email and they got there in time to save her that time.”

How Did Kelly Catlin Kill Herself?

Kelly suffered a concussion during a training event in California on January 5, 2019. The collision caused cracks in the front and back of her helmet. She left the California event the next day to train with the US national team in Colorado. Kelly's family reported severe headaches, dizziness, nausea, and light sensitivity. Depression and a completely different Kelly quickly followed.

Kelly's first suicide attempt resulted in hypoxia and an increase in cardiac enzymes, resulting in shortness of breath. Her concussion symptoms returned as well. She had to close her eyes in an Uber ride to get rid of a headache and nausea. She was ruled out of competing in the UCI track world championships in Poland in late February due to her inability to train. Kelly was devastated and told her family that she was thinking about retiring from cycling.

Kelly’s family kept calling her after this incident to try and encourage her to embrace the rest she required. The family received no response and on March 9, a Friday Kelly’s mother Carolyn called Standford police to check on her daughter. The police found Kelly dead. It was ruled that she had died the night before by committing suicide. Kelly's family donated her brain to the VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank in Boston to investigate any possible concussion damage and to seek explanations for her neurologic symptoms in her final months of life.
