Kohl's is a big American store. It's run by a company called Kohl's Corporation. Right now, it's the biggest store chain in the U.S., with over 1,000 stores all around the country, except for Hawaii. A long time ago, a man named Maxwell Kohl, who came from Poland, started a small grocery store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1927. It became popular, and in 1962, they opened their first big department store.
Then, a big company called British American Tobacco got involved in 1972. Even though the Kohl family still ran things, the tobacco company was in charge. In 1979, they sold the whole company to another big group called BATUS Inc. But then, in 1986, a bunch of investors bought the company back from British American Tobacco and made it a public company in 1992.
Kohl's main office is in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, near Milwaukee. In 2012, it became the biggest department store chain in the U.S., beating its competitor J. C. Penney. It's on a couple of important lists like the S&P 400 and the Fortune 500. In 2019, it was the 23rd biggest store in the U.S. in terms of money made. In 2013, it was the second-biggest department store in the U.S. by sales.
The CEO, which is the big boss, is a person named Tom Kingsbury since February 2023. He took over after Michelle Gass left to work for Levi Strauss.
