Last Night Of Amore 2023 Ending Explained

Crime thrillers, if done well, always leave the audience with something to ponder upon. Usually showing the affairs between the good cops and the bad guys, this genre is known to flirt with lofty philosophical questions about honesty and righteousness versus survival and safety, which continue to run at the back of the mind even after the film ends. Writer-Director Andrea Di Stefano’s latest film, Last Night of Amore, only goes to show that he knows how to craft a thinking man’s crime thriller, while never missing out on the exciting elements associated with the genre.

Last Night of Amore is about an honest cop, Franco Amore, who hesitantly decides to work for a Chinese businessman as a security provider just days before his retirement. On his very last day before retiring, his unblemished career comes under attack when an assignment goes horribly wrong.

What happened at the end of ‘Last Night Of Amore 2023?

After assisting Viviana in finding the diamonds, he instructed her to take Ernesto, Dino's son, and seek refuge in Dino's village until Franco joined them later. He had finally identified the mastermind behind the heist. Before dying, the Carabiniera officer expressed shock and disappointment upon learning that Franco had not shot anyone, indicating that she didn't expect the situation to turn violent. Franco had previously heard similar sentiments from Cosimo, who was the only one aware of Franco's involvement in the job. This led Franco to suspect that Cosimo had manipulated him into working for Zhu, assuming Franco wouldn't resort to violence and would allow the diamonds to be taken.

Franco confronted Cosimo directly, captured him, and brought him to Zhu to reveal all the secrets. It was then that Cosimo disclosed that Zhu's son-in-law was the mastermind behind the entire plan, and Cosimo himself was merely an intermediary, collaborating with his cousin Tito to involve corrupt Carabiniera officers. Franco's troubles weren't over yet. Zhu had lost his diamonds, which were now in Viviana's possession. When asked to return them, Franco refused as a punishment for breaking the agreement of not allowing armed individuals during the operation.

He believed that if the Chinese man hadn't been armed, the violent confrontation resulting in five deaths wouldn't have occurred. The diamonds also served as a means for Ernesto's survival. If Ernesto was implicated in the crime, Franco's pension would be forfeited, and the diamonds would provide for Viviana and their daughter. Providing this explanation for not returning the diamonds, Franco left the building, marking the end of his 35-year service and announcing his retirement. A man was seen leaving the building, potentially aiming to shoot Franco.

Franco's fate is uncertain. The man was likely one of Zhu's guards sent to kill Franco for his refusal to return the diamonds. However, Franco had experienced a significant transformation in the past few days. His own brother-in-law had betrayed him, fueling his anger. Franco's personality had undergone a drastic change. Initially viewed as an honest but weak police officer, afraid to use a gun, he had become a different person in the last few hours. His indecisiveness had caused Dino's death, and he might not be indecisive again.

It is possible that when Franco saw the man approaching from a distance, this new version of him would retaliate and shoot first to ensure his family's safety. However, considering the movie's title, "last night," it suggests that he is dead. Alternatively, it could imply that it was his last day as an honest cop, and from that point on, he would resort to using violence when confronted with criminals.

Last Night Of Amore 2023 Plot and Summary

Franco Amore experienced significant events on his last day as a police officer. Recently, he saved the life of Zhang Zhu, a Chinese businessman, from a cardiac arrest. Franco's brother-in-law, Cosimo, who had business dealings with Zhu, introduced Franco to him, suggesting Franco provide security services for Zhu. Despite having 35 years of law enforcement experience, Franco had a gentle appearance unlike his tough colleagues, likely influenced by his loving wife, Viviana, who always supported him. However, fate had different plans.

After saving Zhu's life and meeting him through Cosimo, Franco agreed to provide security services under certain conditions: no guns or drugs allowed. The deal was agreed upon, and though Franco had concerns about some Chinese criminals in custody, the extra income eased his financial worries. However, a job assignment came the day before his retirement, and tempted by the substantial payment, he accepted it. It was a decision he would soon regret, as it led to the unfortunate death of his partner, Dino.
