The story in The Minish Cap happens before the events of Four Swords and Four Swords Adventures, and it explains how the Four Sword and the bad guy Vaati came to be. The game follows the style of previous Zelda games, especially the ones with a top-down view like A Link to the Past. But it also brings in new things, like Link having a magical talking cap named Ezlo, who can make Link tiny like a Minish.

Legend of Zelda Minish Cap Release Date

The Minish Cap came out in Japan and Europe in November 2004, and later in North America in January 2005 and Australia in April 2005. It's the first new solo adventure in The Legend of Zelda series for a handheld device since Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons in 2001.

People who reviewed the game really liked it. It was considered the 20th best Game Boy Advance game by IGN and got the title of the 2005 Game Boy Advance Game of the Year from GameSpot. The game was released again on the Wii U Virtual Console in 2014 and on the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack in 2023.

Legend of Zelda Minish Cap Gameplay

In The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, the gameplay is similar to other Zelda games. The main character, Link, has to explore a big world and go through various dungeons. Along the way, he gets new items and abilities to help him in his adventure.

The special thing in this game is the "Minish cap," which lets Link become very small by going through certain portals. This small size lets him do things he couldn't in his normal size, like using tiny portals or facing challenges that are too big for him.

In addition to the usual Zelda items like bombs and arrows, The Minish Cap introduces three new items: the Mole Mitts (for digging through walls), the Gust Jar (to suck up enemies and objects), and the Cane of Pacci (for flipping things upside-down). There's also a cool feature where Link can make copies of himself in specific areas, even though the game is meant to be played alone. This idea comes from the multiplayer-focused Four Swords games.

Players can also collect "Kinstones," which are like puzzle pieces that are split into two parts. When you find a matching piece, it can help you progress in the game or give you prizes.

Legend of Zelda Minish Cap Trailer

Legend of Zelda Minish Cap Plot

A long time ago, the land of Hyrule was in trouble because of evil forces. The Picori, a small magical race, gave a young hero named Link a special sword called the Picori Blade and the Light Force. Link used them to lock away the evil in a chest. In gratitude, the people of Hyrule started an annual Picori Festival, believing that a door between their world and the Picori's would open every 100 years.

In the present, Link and Princess Zelda go to the Picori Festival. However, Vaati, the festival's champion, breaks the Picori Blade and lets monsters loose. He turns Zelda into stone and leaves. Since only children can see the Picori, King Daltus tells Link to find them to fix the sword and save Zelda. Link meets Ezlo, a magical hat, in Minish Woods. Ezlo helps Link shrink to Picori size, and the Picori ask Link to get the Four Elements to fix the Picori Blade.

During the journey, Ezlo reveals he was a Picori sage who made a powerful hat called the Mage's Cap. Vaati, his apprentice, stole it and became evil. Vaati traps Ezlo in his current form and takes control of Hyrule Castle. Link gets the Four Elements and fixes the sword, turning it into the Four Sword. They discover the Light Force is in Hyrule's princesses. Vaati spies on them, learning about the Light Force and trying to take it from Zelda.

Link faces Vaati, who becomes powerful using the Light Force. Link defeats Vaati, turning him into a demon. After Link defeats the demon, Ezlo is freed, and Zelda uses the Mage's Cap to undo the damage. Ezlo thanks Link, gives him a new hat, and leaves through the door to the Picori Realm, which closes for another century.
