In the game, players control Link as he journeys through the land of Hyrule, battling to defeat the evil king Ganondorf by exploring dungeons and an overworld through time travel. Innovative gameplay features, such as the target-lock system and context-sensitive buttons, were introduced. To advance through the game, players had to master various songs on an ocarina.

Ocarina of Time received critical acclaim and numerous awards, particularly for its visuals, sound, gameplay, soundtrack, and writing. It is considered one of the best video games of all time and has the highest Metacritic rating of any game. The game was also a commercial success, with over seven million copies sold worldwide, and garnered more pre-orders in the US than any other game at the time.

Since its initial release, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has been re-released on every Nintendo home console and the iQue Player in China. The remastered version, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, was released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011. Master Quest, an alternative version of the game with new puzzles and higher difficulty, was included in one of the GameCube releases and the 3D version.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Guide

In "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time," the fairy Navi awakens the protagonist Link from a nightmare about a man in black armor chasing a young girl. The cursed and dying Great Deku Tree informs Link that a wicked man is trying to conquer the world and has cursed him. Link is given the Spiritual Stone of the Forest and sent to Princess Zelda at Hyrule Castle. Zelda explains that the evil Ganondorf seeks the Triforce, which grants immense power, and that Link must obtain the three Spiritual Stones to claim it before him. Link collects the stones, opens the door to the Sacred Realm, and finds Master Sword, but Ganondorf claims the Triforce. Seven years later, Link must defeat Ganondorf and free the five temples while awakening the five sages. Ganondorf only obtained the Triforce of Power, and he captures Zelda. Link infiltrates the stronghold with the help of the six other sages and defeats Ganondorf. The sages seal Ganondorf in the Dark Realm, and Zelda sends Link back in time.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Gameplay

In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the player controls Link in a third-person perspective within a vast, three-dimensional world. Link's primary weapons are his sword and shield, but he can also use other tools like bombs and magic spells. The game introduced context-sensitive actions and a targeting system called "Z-targeting," which simplifies the control scheme and allows Link to focus on enemies or objects. The game is divided into dungeons and overworld, and Link gains abilities and items by completing side quests or exploring. For example, Link can trade items with non-player characters or acquire a horse to travel faster. The game features twelve melodies that Link can learn on his ocarina, which help him solve puzzles and teleport to different locations. The Ocarina of Time also allows Link to claim Master Sword in the Temple of Time, which transports him seven years into the future and transforms him into an adult with new abilities. Link can freely travel between the two time periods by replacing and taking the sword.
