Les Miserables

"Les Misérables," a 2012 musical film directed by Tom Hooper, is based on Victor Hugo's 1862 novel and the stage musical of the same name by Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil, and Jean-Marc Natel. Starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and Anne Hathaway, the story is set in 19th-century France and follows Jean Valjean, pursued by relentless policeman Javert.

The film, praised for direction, production, and the ensemble cast, premiered in 2012, grossing over $442 million globally. Despite acclaim, Russell Crowe's performance received some criticism. Now, a digitally remixed and remastered version is set for a Dolby Cinema release on February 14, 2024, in the UK and February 23, 2024, in the US, marking the musical's 40th anniversary.

Les Miserables Plot

In 1815, Jean Valjean, released after 19 years for stealing bread, faces challenges as a parolee. The Bishop of Digne shows him kindness, prompting Valjean to start anew. Eight years later, Valjean is a respected figure in Montreuil, but the arrival of Javert, a former prison guard, threatens his secret. Meanwhile, a worker, Fantine, struggles to support her daughter, Cosette, leading to hardships. Valjean intervenes, revealing his identity to help Fantine.

Fleeing Javert, Valjean raises Cosette and becomes a philanthropist. Love blossoms between Cosette and Marius, sparking a series of events during a revolution. Tragedy strikes as friends die, including Éponine, who sacrifices herself for Marius. Javert, conflicted by Valjean's mercy, takes his own life.

Valjean, fearing his past's impact, prepares to leave but not before revealing the truth to Marius. At Marius and Cosette's wedding, Valjean peacefully passes away, joining loved ones in the afterlife.
