Like a Dragon Gaiden Unexpected Evolution

In a surprising turn of events, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the creators of the Like a Dragon series, revealed that Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name was initially planned as downloadable content (DLC) for the upcoming main entry, Infinite Wealth. However, due to its captivating storyline and engaging gameplay, the team decided to transform it into a standalone game.

Unlike the main Like a Dragon game, Gaiden brings players back to the series' action-brawling roots, offering a shorter spin-off with a strong focus on intense combat. Studio director Masayoshi Yokoyama and chief producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto shared in a recent interview that the development of Gaiden took only six months, showcasing the team’s efficiency and dedication to providing exciting experiences for fans.

Interestingly, the Like a Dragon series has seen a rapid succession of releases, with Infinite Wealth launching on January 26, 2024. The developers disclosed that "one team for the most part" worked simultaneously on all three games, sometimes leading to some confusion about the specific project they were working on each day. Such an ambitious development approach demonstrates RGG Studio’s commitment to keeping the series fresh and vibrant.

Initially conceived as mere DLC for Infinite Wealth, Gaiden evolved into a fully-fledged game that delves into the past of the beloved protagonist, Kiryu. Yokoyama explained that the team believed the story deserved more attention and decided to create a standalone adventure. By utilizing the same engine as Infinite Wealth, the development process was expedited, resulting in a polished game within an impressive six-month timeframe.

Yokoyama also addressed RGG Studio’s approach to feedback from social media and the series’ global recognition. Unlike some developers who filter out opinions, he embraces the diverse perspectives and comments from fans. With a touch of humor, he mentioned that he doesn’t even have a block list, seemingly alluding to the notorious actions of Hideki Kamiya, the renowned creator of Bayonetta.

Excitement is building as the release of Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name approaches on November 8th for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms. Fans eagerly anticipate embarking on this unexpected standalone adventure that promises to captivate them with its immersive narrative and exhilarating combat.

Like a Dragon Gaiden Plot

"Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name" continues the story after the events of Yakuza 6 and fits in between the stories of Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. Kazuma Kiryu, the main character, has faked his own death to protect his foster children and is now working as a secret agent under the codename "Joryu" for the Daidoji faction. However, a mission goes wrong, and Kiryu is pulled back into action by a mysterious figure.

New characters in this story include Kihei Hanawa, who works for the Daidoji faction, Homare Nishitani III, the head of the Kijin Clan, a part of the Omi Alliance, Kosei Shishido and Yuki Tsuruno, high-ranking members of the Omi Alliance's Watase Family, Akame, an informant in Sotenbori, Yoshimura, a manager in the Daidoji faction who doesn't like Kiryu, the head priest of the Daidoji Temple, who Kiryu trusts, and the Boss, a secretive leader in the Daidoji faction.

Returning characters from previous Like a Dragon games include Masaru Watase, leader of the Watase Family and part of the Omi Alliance, Daigo Dojima, the sixth chairman of the Tojo Clan, Goro Majima and Taiga Saejima, both senior members of the Tojo Clan, and Ichiban Kasuga, a former member of the Tojo Clan who has a connection with Kiryu.

Like a Dragon Gaiden Gameplay

In "Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name," players take on the role of Kazuma Kiryu and explore two districts: Sotenbori in Osaka and Isezaki Ijincho in Yokohama. There's also a hub area called the Castle, where players can engage in various side activities. The game brings back familiar minigames like karaoke, Pocket Circuit racing, cabaret club, and a fighting arena. A new character named Akame provides Kiryu with additional tasks.

Kiryu can fight using two different styles: Yakuza and Agent. The Yakuza style focuses on aggressive brawler combat, reminiscent of Kiryu's classic fighting style from previous games. On the other hand, the Agent style emphasizes speed and precision, incorporating high-tech gadgets.

Much like in Lost Judgment, "Like a Dragon Gaiden" includes several Master System games that Kiryu can play, such as Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Alien Syndrome, Enduro Racer, Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa, and more. Additionally, the game features arcade titles like Daytona USA 2 and Fighting Vipers 2.
