League of Legends

League of Legends (LoL), developed by Riot Games in 2009, is a popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game. Inspired by Warcraft III Defense of the Ancients, Riot aimed to create a standalone MOBA experience. Free-to-play since its October 2009 release, the game monetizes through character customization purchases and is available on Windows and macOS. In this team-based game, two teams of five players engage in player-versus-player combat, each defending their half of the map.

Players control unique champions with distinct abilities, gaining power through experience, gold, and item purchases to defeat opponents. The primary mode, Summoner's Rift, involves teams pushing through to destroy the enemy Nexus. While praised for accessibility and character design, it faces ongoing criticism for in-game player behavior. Despite this, League of Legends boasts positive reviews and sustained popularity, with millions of concurrent players, leading to various media tie-ins and spin-off games.

When do League of Legends Patches go Live?

In League of Legends, patches don't have a set time to be released on the live servers. However, Riot Games usually takes the servers offline for maintenance about every two weeks. For North American servers, maintenance usually starts at 3 AM PT. European servers (EUW) go down for maintenance at 5 AM, and servers in Eastern Europe (EUNE) at 3 AM.

Oceania (OCE) servers are often the first to get the updates because of time zone differences. The downtime, or the time the game is not available, is usually around 3 hours. After that, players can download the patch and get back into playing on the Summoner’s Rift.

League of Legends Plot

Before 2014, League of Legends players took on the role of "Summoners," acting as political leaders who commanded champions in battles on the Fields of Justice, like Summoner's Rift, with the goal of preventing a disastrous war. The game's plot and setting, however, lacked the political complexities found in other role-playing games, often presenting conflicts in simple "good versus evil" terms. During the early stages of development, Riot Games didn't have dedicated writers, and character biographies were limited to brief paragraphs.

In a significant shift in September 2014, Riot Games decided to revamp the game's fictional setting by removing summoners from the lore to avoid creative stagnation. This move, although potentially unsettling for long-time fans, was deemed necessary as the player base expanded. Following this overhaul, Riot brought in experienced writers like Graham McNeill, known for his work on Warhammer.

The game's lore transitioned from a focus on the Fields of Justice to a new fictional realm known as Runeterra, incorporating diverse elements from Lovecraftian horror to traditional sword and sorcery fantasy. Riot's commitment to expanding the franchise's narrative into various media, including comic books and spin-off video games, further enriched the overall storytelling experience beyond the immediate gameplay.

League of Legends Gameplay

League of Legends (LoL) is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game where players control unique characters called "champions" with distinct abilities. With over 160 champions available, players gain levels during matches by earning experience points (XP) through defeating enemies. Gold, earned by actively engaging the opposing team's minions, champions, or structures, is used to buy items, enhancing a champion's strength.

The flagship game mode, Summoner's Rift, features two teams of five players competing to destroy the enemy Nexus, guarded by champions and turrets. Matches can last from 15 minutes to over an hour, with conventions often dictating player roles in lanes and the jungle.

Other permanent modes include ARAM on Howling Abyss and Teamfight Tactics, an auto battler where players strategically position units. Temporary modes, like Ultra Rapid Fire (URF), One for All, and Nexus Blitz, provide unique gameplay experiences during special events. League of Legends, known for its diverse gameplay modes, has gained lasting popularity and critical acclaim since its release in 2009.
