Enhance Your Weapon Upgrading Skills

Find out how to improve your weapon upgrading abilities with our Lords of the Fallen Rune Tablet Guide, including whether you should choose to free Sparky.

Meet Gerlinde, the Blacksmith

During your early adventures in Lords of the Fallen, you'll come across Gerlinde. She's a smithy by trade and will upgrade your weapons once free from her cell.

The Importance of Rune Tablets

While Gerlinde can upgrade your weapons using upgrade materials, she'll mention that her skills could be improved further if you find a number of Rune Tablets. There are 3 of these in total, each giving Gerlinde the ability to add runes to your weapons and shields.

Freeing Gerlinde

If you haven't already freed Gerlinde, she is encountered in a cell while traveling through the last part of Pilgrim's Perch Descent. To free her, all you need to do is kill the knight that is patrolling nearby and interact with his body to get the Prison Cell Key, which can then be given to Gerlinde. Returning to the hub area, you'll find that Gerlinde has now taken up the once-vacant forge as her own.

Lords of the Fallen Rune Tablet Locations

Each of the 3 Rune Tablets looks just like a normal pickup in the world (a yellow orb with a small wisp of light above it), but they're all in set locations.

  • Cracked Rune Tablet: The first tablet is found in Fitzroy's Gorge, after entering the cave section midway through the area. After crossing over the Umbral bridge extending out from the wooden ramp, keep heading forward and through the gap in the wall.

  • Chipped Rune Tablet: The second tablet is found during the main path of the Upper Calrath Mining District. Partway through, you'll open a door into a mostly intact building. Heading down, there'll be a couple of enemies near a fireplace. The fireplace is where you'll find the Chipped Rune Tablet.

  • Rune Tablet: The very final tablet is found inside a chest in the Tower of Penance. The chest is near the top of the tower, after dropping down a few floors to reach one of the layers with a grate flooring.

Choosing Between Gerlinde and Sparky

After returning to Gerlinde with the final tablet, you'll be presented with a choice. You can either choose to give it to Gerlinde as originally intended or hand it to Sparky and finally allow him to be free. Handing Sparky the tablet is naturally the nicest option and it'll also net you the Travels Resumed achievement/trophy. However, it's also the most practical choice for gameplay too.

When given the tablet, Sparky will teach you how to improve gear without the help of Gerlinde. This lets you upgrade weapons and slot in runes from any Vestige. While Gerlinde says she'll charge you more for her services after doing this, it only seems to lead to a slight Vigor cost increase for items she sells.

Lords of the Fallen Gameplay

Lords of the Fallen offers a third-person view, immersing players in its action-packed world. In this action role-playing game, you can use both close combat weapons and magical abilities to overcome your adversaries. The game draws inspiration from the Soulslike genre, delivering a challenging gameplay and combat style.

Players can team up with others to complete the game cooperatively or engage in competitive multiplayer modes. At the beginning of the game, you have the freedom to create and customize your character from a selection of nine distinct character classes.

Lords of the Fallen features two interconnected realms, Axiom, the realm of the living, and Umbral, the realm of the deceased, accessible through a magical lantern. Although Axiom and Umbral share the same physical space, some areas can only be reached by shifting between these two realms.

When your character is defeated, they are transported to Umbral, where you must return to Axiom to recover lost experience points. Dying in Umbral results in respawning at the last save point with unspent experience points lost. Save points are limited in each region, encouraging resourceful players to craft their own using materials obtained from Umbral creatures.

Lords of the Fallen Plot

In the game's story, a long time has passed since a strong god named Adyr was beaten by three heroes called the Judges: a sneaky one, a religious one, and a fighter. These heroes became like half-gods and made sure that everyone followed strict rules, punishing even small mistakes.

You play as Harkyn, a person with a criminal history shown by marks on his face. A monk named Kaslo sets him free from jail to stop a group of Adyr's evil creatures called the Rhogar, who are causing trouble near the Hand of God mountains.

While exploring, Harkyn encounters powerful Rhogar leaders from somewhere mysterious. With the help of an explorer named Yetka, Harkyn finds a way to the Rhogar Realm and goes on a journey to stop the invasion.

During his adventures, he recovers a stolen item called the Crystal of Travels, faces challenges, and eventually faces the human leader, Antanas, who has his own secrets. The story has choices for players, leading to different endings that affect Adyr, Antanas, and the world's fate.
