In the climactic scene just before the film's conclusion, Richie reveals a shocking truth to John: he confesses that he was actually hired by John's own wife to carry out his murder. John and his wife had been grappling with financial troubles, and she had resorted to taking out a substantial life insurance policy on him, envisioning a substantial payout.
As the tension escalates, a fierce confrontation ensues, resulting in Richie's demise as he is left seemingly lifeless in a water-filled pit. The police, now aware of Richie's claim, begin to strongly suspect the veracity of John's wife's involvement. However, John finds it difficult to accept this revelation and adamantly defends his wife, instructing the police not to question her.

John Felton resides in Orly County, an unspecified southern state that is presumed to be Louisiana. He leads a seemingly ordinary life, married to his wife Joanie, and raising their two children, Sam and John Jr. However, John's world takes a downward spiral when he gets fired from his job as a real estate agent, intensifying his personal crisis.
Returning home, John is greeted by a foreclosure notice on his front door. Seeking solace, he enters his house to discover a surprise birthday party organized by Joanie and the kids. Despite the celebratory atmosphere, the foreclosure notice fuels John's anger, prompting Joanie to take the children to a nearby park.
In the backyard, John gazes at the slowly progressing hole being dug for their swimming pool. Deep in thought, he contemplates desperate measures, even considering suicide. Suddenly, an insistent knocking disrupts his thoughts. John opens the door to a man introducing himself as Richie. Clad in a suit and donning a fedora, Richie explains that his car, a 1972 Pontiac GTO, has stalled and requires a push.
Obliging, John assists while Richie steers. However, as the car backfires, John sustains an injury to his left knee. Unbeknownst to John, Richie conceals a revolver behind his back but swiftly hides it upon spotting a young girl walking her dog.
Richie offers to take John to the hospital, and although hesitant, John reluctantly accepts, unaware that he's left behind his wallet and cell phone at home. During their journey, John becomes increasingly suspicious of Richie's peculiar behavior, particularly his continuous whistling of Dixie. They make a stop at a bar, where John heads across the street to a cell phone dealership.
There, a clerk named Rhonda rudely denies him access to a phone to call Joanie for a ride home. Inside the bar, John unexpectedly encounters Trevor, the man who terminated his employment, and Tammy Strate, with whom he had an affair. Tammy had left Trevor to be with John, which is hinted as a potential reason for his dismissal.
Soon after, police cars begin to swarm the area, prompting Richie to suggest that he and John make a hasty departure. Accompanied by Tammy in her car, they find themselves forced to pull over by an irate trucker. The trucker turns out to be Rhonda's boyfriend, convinced that John is responsible for Rhonda's death. As tensions rise, Richie strikes the trucker with the car, inadvertently killing him.
It is then revealed that Richie, the true culprit behind Rhonda's murder, is a psychopathic killer. Local cops Frank and Latisha mistakenly suspect John as the perpetrator. John realizes that his act of goodwill has led him into a perilous situation. Both he and Tammy find themselves unwilling participants in a violent ordeal.
As Tammy manages to escape from Richie's clutches, John attempts to break free. However, Richie, disguised as a deputy, recaptures him. John takes advantage of a moment of vulnerability and coerces Richie into releasing him, all while Richie threatens the safety of Joanie and their children. Amidst a chaotic massacre at a store, John finds himself apprehended by Frank, who remains unconvinced by John's claims about Richie.
However, as the night progresses, Latisha discovers evidence supporting John's innocence. Murders are committed at a diner while John is in custody, and Tammy corroborates his story about Richie. Frank eventually releases John, who returns home with Joanie and their children. Meanwhile, Frank and Latisha, under the assumption that Richie met his demise at the diner, discover that he is still alive and potentially en route to the Felton household.
