Winning every game is not the priority, but being the classiest coaches, players, and parents in every game we play is. I want to be transparent with where I stand. My priorities in life will most likely be reflected in how I coach and the expectations I have for the boys. My Christian faith is the guide for my life, and while I won't force my beliefs on anyone, I also won't shy away from what I believe. Parents need to know this so they can decide if this aligns with their own beliefs.
As a coach, I believe the biggest role of parents is to be a silent source of encouragement. Most boys just want their parents to do "NOTHING" during the game. Cheering and adding pressure on the kids only makes things worse. I will be putting enough pressure on the boys to play the game the right way with class and respect, and they will already be putting enough pressure on themselves and each other.
It's best for everyone if parents plan on handing these kids over to me and the assistant coaches when they drop them off. The boys should have responsibility for their water and not rely on their parents to keep running to the concession stand. I appreciate it when parents share this information with other guests, like grandparents. If there is an injury, we will of course ask for help, but besides that, let's pretend that the boys are at work for a short amount of time and that parents have been granted the pleasure of watching.
