Mom and Dad ending explained

In the final moments of the film, the parents Brent and Kendall wake up to find themselves tied up in the basement by their children Carly, Josh, and Damon. Kendall claims that she no longer has homicidal intentions, but the children express their love for their parents while admitting that they don't trust them anymore. Brent responds with a disturbing statement, admitting that their behavior makes him want to kill them, despite his efforts to love them.

The scene ends without showing whether the children release their parents or not, leaving the audience uncertain about the parents' future actions. The dialogue between the characters suggests that the parents' homicidal urges may never go away, and they may try to kill their children again if given the chance.

the film's ending is open-ended and leaves the audience to interpret whether the parents' homicidal impulses have been neutralized or not. It's clear that the parents love their children, but the children's mistrust and the parents' violent tendencies make for an uncertain future.

While the film's premise is undeniably disturbing, it also serves as a compelling plot for a horror movie. The concept of not being able to trust the people you depend on the most is a rich and fertile ground for crafting a perfect horror story.

Mom and Dad Plot

The film Mom and Dad follow the Ryan family, an upper-class family of four. Brent Ryan (Nicolas Cage), the father, is going through a severe midlife crisis and bonds with his young son, Josh Ryan (Zackary Arthur). Kendall Ryan (Selma Blair), the mother, feels emotionally disconnected from her teenage daughter, Carly Ryan (Anne Winters), who is typical in her teenage rebellion, stealing money from her parents and distancing herself from the family to hang out with her friends Riley and Damon (Robert T. Cunningham).

Things take a dark turn when the parents begin to hear a mysterious static ringing noise that triggers a mass hysteria, causing them to become homicidal towards their own children. The parents join other parents in a killing spree at a school, targeting other children as well.

Carly witnesses her best friend's mother strangling her friend to death, and Damon's father tries to kill him but accidentally kills himself. The family's housekeeper kills her own daughter, and Josh witnesses it, while Kendall watches in horror as her sister attempts to kill her infant but is stopped by hospital staff.

Carly tries to flee the house but is attacked by her father. However, she is saved by Damon's distraction, and they barricade themselves in the basement. Kendall returns home and attempts to open the cellar but is shot in the shoulder by Josh using Brent's newly purchased gun hidden in the basement. Brent falls into a trap set by the kids as he tries to enter the basement.

Mom and Dad Plot Synopsis

In the subsequent scene, the Ryan family's grandparents, played by Lance Henriksen, enter the picture, and it becomes a full-blown family fight with everyone trying to kill each other. Brent takes out his parents by hitting them with the sports car he recently bought from them. In the following scene, Kendall knocks Carly out with a meat mallet, and it appears as though she might kill her daughter if not for Damon, who surprisingly manages to stay alive and knocks out Kendall.

Brent and Kendall fill the basement with gas and force the children to come out. Kendall throws Damon off the second floor while Carly apologizes for her past behavior, leading to a tender moment between the parents and their children. However, the parents still have murderous impulses and are about to strike when the doorbell rings, interrupting them. The film ends with the parents' future actions left to the audience's interpretation.

Mom and Dad explore a world where unexplained phenomena drive parents to act on their darkest impulses. The film depicts a chilling scenario where parents, driven by mass hysteria, become uncontrollably compelled to kill their own children, sparing no effort to carry out their gruesome mission.
