Moonfall follows the story of a group of astronauts and scientists who discover that the moon has been knocked out of orbit by a mysterious force and is on a collision course with Earth. A former astronaut, a conspiracy theorist, and her teenage daughter team up to find a way to save humanity.
During their mission, the team discovers a man-made structure inside the moon that is powered by a white dwarf. They realize that the moon is not a natural satellite but an alien entity— a benign AI created and corrupted by the ancestors of humanity millions of years ago. The corrupted AI then tries to carry out its programming and destroy Earth, but the team manages to stop it by creating a black hole that sucks it in along with the moon.
As the moon disappears and their spacecraft is damaged, the team is left stranded in space without means of returning to Earth, leaving the possibility of a sequel open.

Moonfall lacks any concrete science, and the writers might have benefited from consulting a real astronaut.
There is such a thing as overdoing it, and Emmerich has certainly done that here. If the writing wasn't so clunky, the dialogue so clichéd and the pacing so breakneck, we might have a better film on our hands. As it is, the two-dimensional, underdeveloped characters and the ridiculous plot made Moonfall a box office flop.
