Mr Inbetween is a TV series that combines black comedy and crime drama and first aired on FX on September 25, 2018, in the US, and on Fox Showcase on October 1, 2018, in Australia. The show is based on the 2005 film The Magician, which was written by and starred Scott Ryan, who also takes on the lead role and writes the series.
The director of the show is Nash Edgerton. Originally, FX Australia commissioned the show as its first original drama production, but after the channel's closure between commission and premiere, it aired on Showcase in Australia. The series was filmed in various locations around Sydney.
Mr Inbetween Season 3 Ending Explained
It's unclear what triggers Ray's decision, but he opts to sell his house, lives in a camper in an isolated area, pays a visit to his father, and informs Brittany that he won't be around for a while. Freddy assigns Ray to investigate a biker in the same desolate location, and he brings Dave along for backup. However, it turns out that Freddy has set Ray up since he was forced to choose between giving him up or getting killed by Rafael.
The situation quickly escalates into a massive shootout, during which Ray tries to flee, loses Dave, sets someone ablaze, and goes on a rampage that ends with Rafael's death and an unexpected reprieve for Freddy. Why Freddy is allowed to live is uncertain, but Ray seems to have realized that continuing the cycle of revenge and betrayal would never end if he killed Freddy. Instead, he seems content to haunt Freddy's dreams, which implies that he prefers being a ghost to actually killing Freddy.
In his retired state, Ray has grown a belly and long hair and works as a taxi driver. However, his latest fare appears to be targeting him, whether because they were hired to do so or are simply twisted. It remains to be seen if Ray still has what it takes to survive, even after taking a break.

Mr Inbetween Season 3 Episode 1
Four men plot to swindle Ray and Gary by making an arms deal with them and robbing them. They deploy a plan where one of the men fakes a gunshot wound to add credibility to the heist. Ray, however, easily detects the deceit, as the accomplices steal the firearms. He confronts them, arranging to recover his weapons, but is denied payment. Consequently, Ray, Gary, and Dave engage in a violent confrontation, killing all of the attackers except for their leader, who later dies from injuries sustained during the skirmish, feeling guilty for leading his friends to their deaths. Ray, troubled by the incident, declines to take any share of the stolen money.
Ray's life takes a downward turn as he attacks a man in a traffic dispute and is imprisoned. In jail, he befriends his cellmate, Adam. He calls Brittany, concealing his location, and reassures her that everything is fine.

Freddy goes to see Ray at the prison and hires him to carry out a task for Rafael, a crime boss, which involves attacking a man with boiling water. Meanwhile, Adam instructs Ray on meditation, leading to a discussion on whether violence is an appropriate way to resolve conflicts. Eventually, an inmate referred to as "champ" by Adam attacks him brutally, unaware that the term is prison slang for "cocksucker".
Dave manages to locate the person responsible for Ray's imprisonment and coerces him into dropping the charges. Upon his release, Ray visits Brittany, who was informed of his incarceration by a friend's mother. Despite his efforts to clear his name, he fails to persuade both Brittany and the mother that he was not at fault for the incident.

At their high school reunion, Ray and Gary are surprised that nobody remembers Ray. Gary is ridiculed by an old bully, leading Ray to start a fight that results in their ejection. Adrian gives Brittany MDMA, which prompts Ray to assault him and extract the location of the dealer, warning him to stay away from Brittany. Ray discovers the dealer engaging in wrong activities with an underage girl, waits for her to leave, and confronts the dealer with an uncertain outcome.
After Brittany comes down from her high, she and Ray argue, but later have a conversation where Ray confesses his desire to protect her from the evil in the world. He acknowledges that he cannot shield her forever and asks her to confide in him if she ever needs to, to which she agrees.

Ray decides to sell his house and takes Brittany to meet Bill for the first time, seemingly at peace with him. He then sets up his trailer out in the wilderness, where Gary informs him that his pornography business has taken off. Later, Freddy sends Ray to search for Alex, who has resurfaced, and he brings Dave along with him. Unfortunately, Rafael and two of his men ambushed them, shooting Dave. Despite Ray's efforts to save him, Dave dies from his injuries after begging Ray to take care of his young son. In retaliation, Ray kills Rafael's men, hunts down Rafael, and kills him too.
Upon realizing Freddy betrayed him, Ray confronts him in his home. Despite Freddy's excuses that Rafael would have killed him if he didn't give Ray up, Ray surprisingly leaves him unharmed. Sometime later, Ray has gained weight, grown his hair out, and now works as a taxi driver. He keeps a picture he took of Zoe in his car's sun visor. While picking up two young men, he realizes they plan to attack him. When one of them says that "Someone might die out here tonight," Ray stops the car and grins knowingly at him before looking at the viewer.

A group of four men plans to make an arms deal with Ray and Gary and rob them. One of the men pretends to be wounded to make the situation look authentic. However, Ray easily sees through the ruse and demands that they return the guns they stole. Brittany finds Ray's pistol and accidentally shoots a hole in the wall. She tries to hide it, but Ray realizes what happened and tightens the gun's security.
Ray and Gary attend their high school reunion, where nobody remembers Ray, and they get into a fight with an old bully. Ray offers to help Freddy's girlfriend, who has noticed him sporting various injuries and promises to give Freddy more time to repay his debt. Ray and Rafael accompany Zoe, a university student, on a drug deal, and they end up crashing the car and hitting a kangaroo. An elderly couple stops to help them, but Rafael kills them. Ray is forced to bury their bodies, and he steals a car to get away from Rafael. Ray decides to sell his house and takes Brittany to meet Bill for the first time.
