My Cousin Rachel ending explained
The conclusion of "My Cousin Rachel" deliberately leaves things open-ended. The main character, Philip, remains unsure of Rachel's innocence even after years have passed, and this uncertainty torments him like a ghost. While the novel ends with Rachel's death and her last words addressing Philip as Ambrose, the film's use of a time jump emphasizes Philip's inability to find closure. The story raises complex questions about guilt and morality, with Philip being punished for his actions that led to Rachel's death. The twist in the tale is that Rachel was not attempting to murder Philip, but rather it was he who was going mad due to a brain tumor. In fact, Philip is revealed to be the true murderer, having intentionally sent Rachel to her death. The final scene with the carriage is a foreboding hint of what is to come for Louise, who is about to learn the truth about Philip and that he is not the prince charming she thought he was.

My Cousin Rachel movie plot
Despite the unsuccessful proposal, Philip decides to confess his love to Rachel and proposes to her in the presence of Nick and his daughter. However, things don't go as planned as Rachel rejects the proposal. Shortly after, Philip falls ill and Rachel nurses him back to health with a special tea. However, he becomes paranoid, realizing that he may be falling victim to the same poisoning that led to Ambrose's death. In a fit of suspicion, he sends Rachel on a dangerous trail, convinced of her guilt. Later, he and Louise search through her belongings for evidence to support his accusation, only to find out that it was Ambrose who was unfaithful, not Rachel. While they are too late to change his course of action, Philip begins to reconsider Rachel's innocence, but it's too late. Rachel dies in a car accident while driving the route that he had advised her to take. In the end, he marries Louise and starts a family.
