Cavuto was born in Westbury, New York, on Long Island, to Kathleen T. (Feeley) and Patrick "Pat" Cavuto. His mother was a homemaker and a United Nations staffer, while his father worked as a sales executive for a can company. He grew up in Danbury, Connecticut, where he attended Immaculate High School. During the Carter Administration, he worked as a White House intern. Cavuto earned a bachelor's degree in mass communication from St. Bonaventure University in 1980 and later went on to earn a master's degree from American University. He has Italian ancestry from his father's side and Irish ancestry from his mother's side. However, around 30 years ago, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, an immune system attacking cancer, and later with multiple sclerosis.
