Octopath Traveler II is a video game created by Square Enix and Acquire. It's the follow-up to Octopath Traveler from 2018 and the third game in the series after the mobile game Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent in 2020. However, this new game has a different set of characters and a new setting.

The game came out worldwide on February 24, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows. This is the first time an Octopath game is available on PlayStation consoles. Versions for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S are planned to be released in early 2024.

• First Character Choice:
  • Choose your first character wisely, as you'll have to keep them until you finish their storyline.
  • Picking the "wrong" character won't put you at a big disadvantage.
• Enemy Names Color Code:
  • White: Healthy
  • Yellow: About halfway to death
  • Red: About to die
  • Use this as an estimate when selecting targets.
• Focus on One Enemy:
  • Concentrate damage on one enemy at a time, especially on broken enemies.
  • Breaking enemies (no shields) makes them vulnerable and takes more damage.
• Break Bosses During Charge:
  • Check turn order to see if you can break the boss before its next turn.
  • Breaking a boss during charge cancels their attack.
• Danger Levels:
  • Pay attention to recommended levels for areas.
  • Attempt to have your entire party at the recommended level for better success.
• Prioritize Equipment Over Levels:
  • Gear is crucial for damage; make sure your party is well-equipped.
  • Stats from weapons are essential for success in battles.
• Use Latent Abilities Wisely:
  • Latent abilities are special skills; some should be used immediately.
  • For example, Agnea's ability turns single-target buffs into multi-target, use wisely.
  • Save abilities like Temenos' for breaking shields.
• Memorize Weakness Order:
  • The order of weaknesses is static.
  • Memorize: Sword, Spear, Dagger, Axe, Bow, Staff, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, Holy, Dark.
• Use Day and Night to Your Advantage:
  • Abilities on NPCs change with time of day.
  • Some party buffs activate at specific times; plan accordingly.
• Running Attracts More Enemies:
  • Running attracts more enemies, sprinting increases encounters.
  • Consider combining with the nighttime for efficient grinding.

  • Use Throné's Steal or Agnea's Entreat to take items.
  • Items may include valuable equipment, healing items, and quest items.

Octopath Traveler 2 Gameplay

Octopath Traveler II's gameplay is like the first game, following the style of a traditional JRPG. Players control eight different characters, each with their own reasons for exploring the game world. Each character has a special 'path action' that lets players interact with non-player characters, leading to rewards or support for their cause.

In this sequel, there are now distinct daytime and nighttime segments, affecting the available path actions. For instance, during the day, one can make a character duel to learn new battle skills, while at night, spending in-game currency can be used to bribe characters for information or items.

The game keeps the turn-based battle system from the first installment, featuring the 'break' and 'boost' mechanics. Enemies have hidden weaknesses, and once discovered, exploiting them weakens the enemy temporarily. Boost points accumulate each turn, allowing for extra moves in future turns. A new addition to the battle system is 'Latent Powers,' special abilities unique to each character that recharge when taking damage or breaking the enemy.

Octopath Traveler 2 Plot

In Octopath Traveler II, the story keeps the same structure of following the journeys of eight different characters, but now introduces a new set of characters in a fresh setting called Solistia. This world is more modern, resembling the nineteenth or twentieth centuries, and sees the advent of technologies like the steam engine.

The main characters include Agnea, a dancer aspiring to be a star like her mother, Partitio, a merchant aiming to end poverty, Hikari, a warrior prince reclaiming his kingdom for peace, and others each with their own unique goals. As players progress through the four to five individual chapters for each character and two "Crossed Paths" chapters where two characters work together, they uncover a shadowy group called the Moonshade Order worshipping the dark god Vide the Wicked.

The travelers ultimately thwart the Order's plan to bring eternal night based on Vide's teachings. An epilogue reveals the Order's resurrection of Vide, with players having the chance to face a powerful optional boss, Galdera the Fallen, by completing certain side stories.
