Lennie's unintentional killing of a puppy is an indication of the danger he poses to others. To prevent further harm and complete the karmic circle of justice, George made the difficult decision to end Lennie's life. Though it was a tragic outcome, George found solace in the knowledge that he had spared an innocent being from further suffering.
Before that, one could argue that Lennie served as an instrument of justice, bringing punishment to the story's two cruel characters, Curley and Curley's wife. Curley had violently attacked Lennie, and Lennie responded by crushing his hand. Curley's wife had insulted vulnerable workers and threatened to have Crooks hanged, and Lennie inadvertently caused her death as a consequence.

The film begins with George Milton recalling past events while riding in a boxcar to an unknown destination. During the Great Depression, George and mentally disabled Lennie Small fled their previous job after Lennie was accused of attempted rape due to his love of stroking soft things. They find work at Tyler's ranch near Soledad, where George reluctantly repeats their shared dream of owning a piece of land and instructs Lennie to hide in the brush if he ever gets into trouble.
The boss is sceptical of Lennie's mental state, but George lies and says he is his cousin who was kicked in the head by a horse. They befriend Candy and dislike the boss' son, Curley, who picks fights with larger men. Curley's wife flirts with Lennie and George, but George warns Lennie to avoid her.
After a hard day, George is proud of Lennie's work and buys him a puppy. Candy offers to contribute to their dream of owning land. However, their dream is interrupted when Curley accuses Lennie of laughing at him and attacks him, causing Lennie to crush his hand. Slim intervenes and threatens to reveal the truth behind Curley's injury if he tries to get George and Lennie fired. Lennie accidentally kills his puppy, and Curley's wife confides in him about her loneliness and shattered dreams. When she lets him stroke her hair, Lennie accidentally breaks her neck while trying to keep her quiet.
Candy discovers the dead woman and alerts George. Curley leads a mob to find and kill Lennie, but George finds him first and retells their dream of owning land and tending rabbits. As George reaches the end of the story, he shoots Lennie in the back of the head, sparing him from a cruel death at the hands of the mob. The film ends with George in the boxcar, reflecting on his time with Lennie.
