Okami

Ōkami is a highly acclaimed action-adventure video game that was developed by Clover Studio and published by Capcom. Originally released in 2006 for the PlayStation 2 in Japan and North America, and in 2007 in Europe and Australia, it is set in classical Japan and is heavily inspired by Japanese mythology and folklore. The game's narrative follows the Shinto sun goddess, named Amaterasu, who appears in the form of a white wolf, on a mission to save the land from darkness.

One of the most notable features of Ōkami is its Sumi-e-inspired cel-shaded visual style, which gives the game a unique and beautiful appearance. The Celestial Brush, which is a gesture-based system for performing miracles, is another major aspect of the game. Players use this brush to draw on the game's world, allowing them to manipulate the environment and overcome obstacles.

Interestingly, the game's visual style was not initially planned to be cel-shaded. In fact, Clover Studio had initially intended to use more traditional realistic rendering for the game. However, this proved to be too much for the graphics processing power of the PlayStation 2. As a result, the studio switched to a cel-shaded style, which ultimately led to the concept of the Celestial Brush.

The gameplay of Ōkami is heavily modeled on The Legend of Zelda, which is one of the favorite series of the game's director, Hideki Kamiya. Players explore the game's world, battling enemies and solving puzzles in order to progress. As they progress through the game, players acquire new brush techniques and other abilities that allow them to take on tougher challenges.

The name of the game, Ōkami, is a pun in Japanese, as it can mean either "great god" or "wolf." This is fitting, as the game's protagonist, Amaterasu, is both a great god and a wolf.

Ōkami has received widespread critical acclaim for its beautiful visuals, engaging gameplay, and compelling story. In 2008, a port for the Wii was developed by Ready at Dawn, Tose, and Capcom, which introduced motion controls to the game. To this day, Ōkami remains a beloved and highly regarded title within the gaming community.

Okami Gameplay

Ōkami is a video game developed by Clover Studio and published by Capcom that was released in 2006 in Japan and North America, and in 2007 in Europe and Australia for the PlayStation 2. The game has a unique art style that is inspired by classical Japanese ink illustration or sumi-e.

The game's protagonist is a Shinto sun goddess named Amaterasu who has taken the form of a white wolf to save the land from darkness. The game is a mix of action, platform, and puzzle genres and has been compared to The Legend of Zelda series in terms of overall gameplay style.

The player controls Amaterasu, the main character, in a cel-shaded environment that has been rendered in a watercolor style. The game's visuals have been praised for their resemblance to a sumi-e painting. The game's director, Hideki Kamiya, has admitted to being a Zelda fan and has taken inspiration from the series for the game's overall gameplay style.

The main story is linear and is directed by Amaterasu's guide, Issun. However, the game also features numerous side quests and optional activities that allow players to explore the game world and take the story at their own pace. As players complete quests, side quests, and small additional activities, they earn Praise which can be used to increase various statistics of the character such as the amount of health and the number of ink wells for Celestial Brush techniques.

The Celestial Brush is a gesture system that allows Amaterasu to perform miracles. Combat in the game takes place in a ghostly virtual arena, and Amaterasu can fight enemies using a combination of weapons, fighting techniques, and Brush methods. Players are rewarded with money (as yen) at the end of combat, with bonuses for completing a battle quickly and without taking damage.

The money can be spent at merchants and dojos across the land, featuring healing goods, better weapons, tools, key items for completing quests, and combat techniques. Players can earn Rare Demon Fangs through combat, which can be traded for unique items that are beneficial in gameplay but not required to complete the game.

The game features weapons inspired by the Imperial Regalia of Japan, such as the Reflector, the Rosaries, and the Glaive, which can be equipped on Amaterasu as either main or sub-weapons. These weapons can be used in addition to other melee attacks that the player can have Amaterasu learn through the course of the game.
