Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, also known as OMD, are a British electronic band formed in 1978. The group started in Wirral, Merseyside, with Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys as the main songwriters.
They added Martin Cooper and Stuart Kershaw to complete the band. OMD is considered the pioneer of electronic music, mixing experimental sounds with catchy pop tunes. They were part of the synth-pop movement and became famous during the MTV era in the United States.
Their debut single, "Electricity," was released in 1979. OMD gained popularity in Europe with their anti-war song "Enola Gay" in 1980. Their album "Architecture & Morality" and its hit singles furthered their success. However, their experimental album "Dazzle Ships" in 1983 was less well-received. They shifted to a more radio-friendly sound with "Junk Culture" in 1984, which brought them success in the US, including the hit "If You Leave" from the movie "Pretty in Pink."
After creative differences, Humphreys and others formed a new band, leaving McCluskey as the sole member of OMD in 1989. They returned with a new lineup and explored dance-pop music with albums like "Sugar Tax" in 1991.
Despite initial success, OMD struggled with changing music trends and disbanded in 1996. They reunited in 2006, focusing on their early experimental sound. OMD has had numerous chart hits in the UK and the US and has been influential in the synth-pop genre.
