Regarded as a five-star recruit by ESPN and Rivals, Okongwu transitioned to the college level, playing for the USC Trojans and receiving first-team All-Pac-12 honors in his only season. In the 2020 NBA draft, he was selected as the 6th overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks, where he has been showcasing his skills as a center/power forward since the beginning of his professional career in 2020.

• The team achieved a 35–0 record, securing the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Open Division state title.
• Okongwu shared the MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year honors with LaMelo Ball, averaging 7.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game.
• In his sophomore season, Okongwu helped Chino Hills reach the CIF Southern Section Open Division and CIF State Southern Regional semifinals.
• During his junior season, he led the team to CIF Southern Section Division I and CIF Division I championships, earning individual honors such as California Mr. Basketball and USA Today All-USA California first team.
• Okongwu's senior season saw Chino Hills as the CIF Division I state title runner-up, with him repeating as California Mr. Basketball after averaging 27 points, 11 rebounds, 4.3 blocks, and four assists per game.
• He became the fifth player ever to receive the California Mr. Basketball title twice, and he also earned USA Today All-USA California first team distinction.
