Overwatch 2

In 2022, Blizzard Entertainment released Overwatch 2, a follow-up to the popular game Overwatch from 2016. It was meant to include both player-versus-player (PvP) modes and cooperative modes where players team up against the game. However, plans for these cooperative modes were canceled in 2023, and the game now focuses mainly on PvP.

In PvP, the game made some big changes. Instead of teams having six players, they now have five. They also made significant adjustments to some of the main characters in the game.

Overwatch 2 is free to play and available on various gaming platforms like Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It started as an early access game on October 4. One important feature is that players can play with each other no matter which platform they're using, which is called cross-platform play.

On August 10, 2023, Blizzard removed the "early access" label with the release of Overwatch 2's sixth season, indicating that the game was now fully launched and available to everyone.

Overwatch 2 Game Play

Overwatch 2 is a game where players pick from 35 unique heroes split into damage, support, and tank classes. It's all about players fighting each other in various modes and maps.

The game changed team sizes from six to five, aiming for faster gameplay. Some characters got adjustments: damaged heroes move faster, support heroes heal slowly over time, and tanks can play more offensively.

A new mode called "Push" was added, where teams compete to push a robot payload. Some old maps aren't available in main modes due to balance issues.

Overwatch 2 is free to play, ditching loot boxes for a battle pass system with rewards and a store for direct purchases.

You need a Blizzard account to play, and progress can be shared across platforms except for competitive rankings. New story missions and special hero training missions were introduced, available for free during specific seasons but can be bought separately.

Overwatch 2 Development

Overwatch 2 was revealed in 2019 to keep a shared environment with the original game, allowing players from both games to play together in existing modes. It was planned to release new content for both games. However, Overwatch 2 later became a free-to-play game, replacing the original. When it launched on October 4, 2022, the original game's servers were shut down, and players kept their unlocked items.

The game uses an upgraded engine, allowing bigger maps for new story-based PvE elements. All heroes got visual upgrades, but not all were ready by the game's reveal.

Initially planned for a 2022 release, the game's launch was delayed to improve quality. Plans emerged to merge both games into one to ensure a seamless experience. Notably, Jeff Kaplan left Blizzard, and Aaron Keller took over as lead developer. They also realized they put too much focus on Overwatch 2, neglecting support for the original game.

Blizzard decided to split Overwatch 2's release, launching the PvP portion in beta in April 2022 and delaying the PvE part. Early access without the PvE mode started on October 4, 2022, but it faced issues like server problems due to attacks and problems verifying some players' identities.

The game intended to introduce PvE modes separately from the PvP, offering story-driven events. However, these plans were scrapped in May 2023 due to concerns about how it might affect PvP. Instead, Blizzard announced paid story missions for players, including in-game rewards and cosmetic items.
